Introduction

The Duke University Office of Information Technology (OIT) is seeking an AI Security Engineer to join the IT Security Office (ITSO). ITSO is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and assessing information security across Duke University. In this role, you will help design, deploy, and operate Duke's AI security architecture while working collaboratively with identity and access management teams, compliance officers, and AI developers across the institution.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least three years of experience in security engineering, AI/ML infrastructure, identity and access management, or systems administration.
  • Experience with API gateway architectures and AI/LLM routing infrastructure (e.g., LiteLLM, Kong).
  • Expertise in federated identity technologies including SAML2, OAuth 2.1, and OIDC.
  • Experience with endpoint security platforms and data loss prevention tools.
  • Knowledge of AI-specific threats such as prompt injection, jailbreak techniques, and agent drift.
  • Linux system administration experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AI detection and response platforms.
  • Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) architectures and tool governance.
  • Experience conducting threat modeling and adversarial testing of AI-enabled applications.
  • Python scripting experience for security automation.
  • Experience with SIEM platforms and security analytics.
  • Familiarity with OWASP Generative AI security frameworks.
  • Security, cloud, or AI-related certifications.

Position Type

Full-time position, hybrid flexibility. Must be available for 1-2 meetings per week in Durham, NC.

Essential Job Duties
  • Deploy and maintain AI gateway infrastructure in on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Integrate AI detection, response, and compliance tooling.
  • Conduct security reviews of AI-enabled applications.
  • Develop and enforce AI security policies and governance controls.
  • Monitor AI usage and telemetry to detect anomalous behavior.
  • Coordinate adversarial and penetration testing exercises.
  • Support procurement evaluation of AI security products.
  • Design endpoint-level security controls for AI clients.
  • Maintain dashboards and reporting to communicate AI security posture.
