Job description:

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Instrumentation and Controls Supervisor is responsible for the supervision, coordination, and oversight of I&C technicians engaged in the inspection, repair, calibration, and rebuilding of electrical and instrumentation systems and their associated structures. The Supervisor will ensure safe, reliable, and efficient execution of maintenance activities while supporting plant performance, compliance, and long-term asset integrity.

Role and Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct, supervise, and coordinate the daily activities of Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) technicians.
  • Conduct System Condition Assessments to identify deficiencies, document findings, and implement corrective actions.
  • Utilize plant and industry-standard software and analytical tools to develop performance and availability improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in project planning and execution, including scope reviews, design basis requirements, walk-downs, compliance checks, and acceptance testing.
  • Plan and support major component overhauls and scheduled system outages.
  • Lead root cause analyses of forced outages and equipment failures, driving corrective and preventive actions.
  • Interface with and monitor activities of third-party equipment and service providers.
  • Document and resolve unplanned design basis changes.
  • Develop, review, and oversee acceptance test plans and ensure compliance with engineering standards.
  • Maintain and update design basis documentation to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations to inform capital planning, senior management, and stakeholders.
  • Provide engineering and technical support to Station and Plant leadership.
  • Represent the organization on cross-functional committees and industry working groups.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with internal teams, external contractors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Professional Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in industrial maintenance within a large process industry (power generation, refinery, military/merchant marine).
  • At least 4 years of supervisory experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of control system design, construction, operations, maintenance, testing, and analysis within the utility, oil & gas, or marine propulsion industries.
  • Experience with DCS, PLC, BMS, low-voltage switchgear, breakers, power cables (up to 480V), UPS, and MCCs.
  • Proficiency in equipment sizing and analysis, life cycle management, protection schemes, relay settings, and PLC programming.
  • Familiarity with industry codes, standards, procedures, and specifications; ability to obtain advanced knowledge as required.
  • Proven leadership skills, including direct supervisory experience with the ability to lead, motivate, and develop personnel.
  • Prior experience supervising a unionized workforce is strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline is highly desirable.
  • Experience managing a unionized workforce is a plus.
  • Must be able to work in indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions. Exposure to extreme heat, heights, high-voltage switchyards, confined spaces, fuel storage areas, marine environments, and other industrial settings. Use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Will be required to work while wearing respirators or SCBA equipment.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders and perform work at heights using scaffolds.
  • Must be able to perform tasks in confined spaces and above active waterways.
  • Must be able to endure physically demanding environments while maintaining safety protocols.

Schedule:

  • Standard hours are Monday-Friday arriving before and leaving after the workforce. The workforce hours are 7-3:30 which (typically) results in supervisors working a 6:30a – 4:00p schedule.
  • Overtime, nights, holiday and weekend work is required as the needs of the plant and equipment dictate.
