Who We Are The Network Operations Planning and Orchestration team builds and operates the core platforms that power supply chain planning, optimization, and execution across Wayfair's large, highly complex network. Our systems support critical decisions around inventory positioning, capacity planning, and volume flow across thousands of products, multiple fulfillment paths, and rapidly changing demand.
We own and evolve planning and optimization platforms that are deeply embedded in both daily operations and long-term strategy. Working closely with Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, and Data teams, we build reliable, scalable systems that model real-world constraints and turn them into clear, actionable decisions that keep the network running efficiently at scale.
What You'll Do - Design, build, and maintain highly scalable backend services and platforms that support supply chain planning and optimization across large, distributed networks with high data volume and operational complexity.
- Develop and evolve data pipelines and optimization workflows, including AI and ML driven models, that inform inventory allocation, capacity planning, and end to end network flow decisions in near real time.
- Build and operate distributed systems that are fault tolerant, observable, and resilient, designed to perform reliably under heavy load, tight latency requirements, and continuously changing constraints.
- Collaborate with product, operations, and analytics partners to translate complex, real world business constraints into well-architected, scalable technical solutions.
- Improve system performance, data quality, and decision latency through thoughtful system design, applied AI techniques, and continuous iteration in production environments.
- Identify opportunities to simplify architectures, reduce operational friction, and use automation and intelligent systems to improve both developer efficiency and planner productivity.
- Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews, and on-call rotations to ensure high standards of engineering excellence, reliability, and operational health.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of strong ownership, technical rigor, and continuous improvement in a complex, distributed environment.
What You'll Need - 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong track record of building scalable platforms or internal tools that support large-scale, data-intensive operations.
- Deep experience in backend development using Java, C#, or Python, with strong proficiency in SQL and experience working with both relational and non-relational databases.
- Proven ability to architect systems for performance, scalability, and observability in complex, distributed service environments, including event-driven and streaming architectures using Kafka.
- Hands-on experience designing and operating distributed systems that handle high data volume, concurrency, and operational complexity.
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native platforms, particularly Google Cloud Platform, and familiarity with containerized infrastructure such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Strong understanding of modern software development practices, including CI/CD pipelines, test automation, and production monitoring.
- Experience collaborating cross-functionally with product management, operations, and analytics to define, prioritize, and deliver impactful platform initiatives.
- Demonstrated success in mentoring and guiding junior engineers, fostering technical growth, ownership, and an inclusive team culture.
- Proficiency with monitoring and logging tools such as DataDog, Elasticsearch, or InfluxDB to ensure system reliability and operational health.
- A passion for building tools and platforms that empower others, using automation and intelligent systems to improve efficiency and decision-making at scale.
Nice to Have - Experience with supply chain, logistics, or operations-focused systems, especially planning, optimization, or capacity modeling platforms.
- Familiarity with AI or machine learning applications in production systems, such as optimization, forecasting, decision support, or intelligent automation.
- Exposure to data modeling for analytical and operational workloads, including working with large fact tables, dimensional models, or near real-time analytics.
