Location: Farmington Hills, MI + Detroit, MI (Hybrid)
Pay Range: $67-$76
Length: 6 months
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop backend services and APIs that manage and enforce system behavior across multiple services
- Define enforcement, validation, and filtering approaches within distributed system architectures
- Establish reusable cross-service patterns and controls adopted by engineering teams
- Improve observability across systems through structured logging, metrics, and distributed tracing
- Own and maintain shared platform components and internal tooling
- Mentor engineers on defensive programming, safe system design, and failure handling practices
Core Capabilities
- Strong proficiency in Python and TypeScript, with ability to produce production-quality code
- Experience working in cloud environments, particularly AWS
- Expertise in designing and building scalable backend systems and APIs
- Ability to define enforcement patterns and interface contracts used across teams
- Systems-oriented mindset, including understanding of service dependencies and failure scenarios
- Clear communication of technical concepts, particularly around safe and defensive design
- Demonstrated technical curiosity and ability to form well-supported engineering decisions
Role Focus
This position emphasizes building systems that maintain predictable and safe behavior under various conditions, including misuse, failure, or unexpected input. The role involves defining where and how enforcement mechanisms are applied across services, rather than focusing on user-facing feature delivery. Success in this role requires both technical depth and the ability to establish patterns that are broadly adopted by other engineers.
Qualifications
- 5-8 years of software engineering experience
- Strong proficiency in Python and TypeScript
- Experience delivering production systems in AWS environments (e.g., Lambda, Fargate, API Gateway)
- Experience designing enforcement, validation, or filtering logic across multiple services
- Demonstrated ability to define system interfaces, contracts, and reusable patterns
- Experience mentoring engineers on best practices for safe and reliable software development
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing and building agentic or multi-step workflow systems
- Familiarity with large language model (LLM) integration patterns, including guardrails, prompt validation, or output filtering
- Experience with AWS Bedrock or similar AI service platforms
- Background in platform engineering, developer tooling, or shared infrastructure development
