Location: 100% Remote
Role Level: Senior / Lead

About the Role
We are seeking a Senior or Lead CA Gen Engineer with deep expertise in CA Gen (Broadcom Gen, COOL: Gen) to join an established team of 15–20 engineers on a large-scale mainframe modernization initiative.
In this role, you will play a key part in rebuilding legacy applications and eliminating dependencies on CA Gen and mainframe technology. You will translate complex model and code knowledge into detailed technical specifications that directly drive the forward-engineering of modern replacement systems.
Key Responsibilities
  • Legacy Analysis: Analyze existing CA Gen (COOL: Gen) models, runtime frameworks, and generated COBOL code to understand legacy application logic and behavior.
  • Specification & Architecture: Create detailed technical specifications from legacy CA Gen applications to support forward-engineering efforts.
  • Migration Strategy: Collaborate with the engineering team to design, validate, and execute migration approaches from CA Gen/mainframe environments to modern platforms.
  • Reverse Engineering: Lead reverse-engineering efforts to ensure all core business logic and rules are accurately captured and preserved.
  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner with architects and developers to align legacy system behaviors with new application designs.
  • Risk Management: Identify risks, gaps, and edge cases within legacy CA Gen models throughout the modernization process.
  • Documentation: Document legacy system architecture, data flows, and system dependencies.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Conduct knowledge-sharing sessions to transfer CA Gen and COBOL expertise across the broader team.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with CA Gen (Broadcom Gen, COOL: Gen), including runtime frameworks and model internals.
  • 5+ years of COBOL software development experience.
  • Deep understanding of CA Gen-generated COBOL code.
  • Proven track record on mainframe modernization or application migration projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate legacy application logic into clear, detailed specifications for modern system replacement.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills focused on legacy codebases.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
Nice to Have
  • Database & Mainframe Tech: Experience with CICS, Db2, VSAM, or IMS DB.
  • Modern Stacks: Familiarity with Java or C#.
  • Cloud: Familiarity with AWS.
