Senior Systems Engineer (Unix/Red Hat) Infrastructure & Automation

Location: Rochester, NY Onsite with some hybrid option. Need locals.

Contract/Contract to hire

General Purpose Supports and administers onpremise and cloud infrastructure, including virtual environments, operating systems, storage, automation, monitoring, and disaster recovery. Develops scripts and automation to enhance reliability and performance. Leads continuous infrastructure integration efforts and ensures secure, scalable, and stable operations across the institution s IT environment.

Essential Functions

• Design, implement, and support onpremise and cloud infrastructure, including highavailability virtual environments and hybrid integrations.
• Administer and optimize Unix/Linux systems with strong emphasis on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
• Automate configuration, provisioning, and patching using Ansible.
• Implement and maintain monitoring and observability solutions, including Grafana, for dashboards, alerting, and performance analytics.
• Perform capacity planning, performance tuning, OS patching, firmware updates, and system hardening.
• Lead incident resolution, rootcause analysis, and followup to ensure platform stability.
• Maintain interoperability across multivendor environments and ensure compliance with institutional standards.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, solution designs, and operational procedures.
• Evaluate new tools and technologies to enhance infrastructure services.
• Participate in scheduled maintenance windows and provide 247 oncall support on rotation.
• Mentor and guide team members as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Experience

• High School diploma and 10+ years of relevant experience required; Bachelor s degree preferred.
• Experience leading Systems Engineers preferred.
• Experience in higher education or healthcare environments preferred.
• Expertise with AWS, Azure, virtualization platforms, and clustered highavailability systems required.
• Strong proficiency with RHEL, Unix/Linux administration, and shell scripting required.
• Handson experience with Ansible and automation/orchestration tools required.
• Experience with Grafana and monitoring/observability platforms required.
• Knowledge of server hardware, SAN/NAS storage, and enterprise backup solutions required.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills.
• Ability to provide oncall support and perform afterhours maintenance.
• Ability to travel to and from data center facilities.
