Experience Level: 10+ Years Total (7+ years in Search Engineering; 3+ years in Tech Lead roles)

Executive Summary

Caterpillar is looking for two Lead Software Engineers to drive the technical direction of their e-commerce search platforms (cat.com, catdealer.com). The team currently uses Lucidworks (Lucene-based) and is exploring migrations to newer search technologies. This is a hands-on leadership role involving search relevance tuning, ML-based ranking, and cloud-native architecture.

Top 3 Critical Requirements

Enterprise Search Expertise: Deep experience with Lucene, Solr, OpenSearch, or Lucidworks. Focus must be on E-commerce/Product search, not log analytics.
Search Quality & Data Science: Expertise in relevance tuning, ML-based ranking concepts, and understanding user search behavior (e.g., how results appear on platforms like Amazon).
AWS Cloud: Strong experience building and deploying in AWS environments.

Technical Stack

Languages: Python and Java (Required); Scala (Bonus).
Search Technologies: Apache Lucene, Solr, OpenSearch, Lucidworks, Coveo.
Modern Search: Knowledge of NLP, Vector Search, and Generative AI integration is highly desirable.
Infrastructure: AWS, Low-latency APIs, Memory-storage solutions, CI/CD, and GitHub.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Strategy: Define long-term vision for search scalability and query complexity.
Hands-on Optimization: Troubleshoot production search issues, enhance query logic, and improve indexing pipelines.
Leadership: Mentor a team of search engineers and lead technical reviews.
Analytics: Leverage KPIs (CTR, Zero Search) to continuously improve performance via A/B testing.
