Biomedical Equipment Technician I-IV

Corporate Services | Penn Presbyterian Medical Center
Location: 51 N. 39th Street, Philadelphia, PA
Schedule: On-site, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Summary

Penn Medicine is hiring Biomedical Equipment Technicians at multiple levels (I-IV) based on experience, technical expertise, and qualifications.

Biomedical Equipment Technicians support Clinical Engineering operations by maintaining, repairing, calibrating, and inspecting medical equipment to ensure safe, reliable patient care. Responsibilities expand with each level, from entry-level technical support to advanced troubleshooting, mentoring, regulatory readiness, and equipment planning.

Biomedical Equipment Technician I

Under close supervision, performs preventive maintenance, repair, calibration, inspection, and documentation for low-risk medical equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, and calibrate medical devices following OEM and AEM standards.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and quality assurance inspections.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and escalate complex problems appropriately.
  • Maintain service records and regulatory documentation.
  • Support inventory management and replacement-part tracking.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to clinical partners.
  • Participate in departmental projects and on-call coverage as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED plus:
    • 1+ year of experience maintaining electromechanical systems; or
    • Enrollment in/completion of a BMET or Clinical Engineering program with internship; or
    • Completion of specialized OEM training with related experience.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Applied Science or related field preferred.
  • AAMI certification preferred.

Biomedical Equipment Technician II

Works with moderate independence to support low- and medium-risk medical devices while providing guidance to less experienced technicians.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair more complex equipment.
  • Mentor BMET I technicians and assist with technical training.
  • Support equipment installations, relocations, and acceptance testing.
  • Assist clinical staff with equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Communicate regulatory and safety requirements to department stakeholders.
  • Recommend outside service support when appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED with 2+ years of relevant experience; or
  • Associate's degree plus 1+ year of related experience; or
  • Bachelor's degree with related training/experience; or
  • DoD BMET training with 1+ year of related experience.
  • AAMI certification preferred.

Biomedical Equipment Technician III

Serves as a senior technical resource responsible for complex equipment, device integration, networking, and mentoring junior staff.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Independently diagnose and resolve issues involving low-, medium-, and high-risk equipment.
  • Support medical device integration and network connectivity.
  • Mentor junior technicians and provide technical leadership.
  • Participate in Environment of Care rounds and corrective action planning.
  • Assist with new equipment evaluations, planning, and implementation.
  • Coordinate with Information Services to support compliance and connectivity requirements.
  • Support accreditation and regulatory readiness activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED with 5+ years of relevant experience; or
  • Associate's degree with 4+ years of experience; or
  • Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of experience; or
  • DoD BMET training with 4+ years of experience.
  • AAMI certification preferred.

Biomedical Equipment Technician IV

Functions as a subject matter expert and technical leader, providing advanced support for highly complex medical technologies and regulatory initiatives.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Lead resolution of the most complex equipment issues.
  • Manage recall notifications and regulatory readiness activities.
  • Mentor technicians across all levels.
  • Participate in CMS, Joint Commission, and regulatory inspections.
  • Lead equipment evaluations and recommend new technologies and testing procedures.
  • Drive process improvements, best practices, and operational excellence initiatives.
  • Serve as a key resource for clinical, technical, and compliance matters.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED with 8+ years of relevant experience; or
  • Associate's degree with 6+ years of experience; or
  • Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of experience; or
  • DoD BMET training with 6+ years of experience.
  • AAMI certification preferred.

  • On-call support may be required.
  • Valid driver's license, personal vehicle, and insurance may be required based on assignment.
