The Design Controls Engineer role is responsible for supporting and driving design control process execution to ensure engineering designs are compliant, traceable, and audit-ready in accordance with AS9100 requirements.

This role operates with moderate independence and increasing ownership, ensuring requirements traceability, verification rigor, and proper documentation across the design lifecycle. In addition to technical responsibilities, this position plays a key role in coordinating cross-functional activities and supporting program execution, providing a strong foundation for growth into project and program management roles.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Execute and support Design Control processes aligned with AS9100 and internal quality management requirements.
  • Ensure documentation of requirements traceability from customer requirements through design, verification, and validation.
  • Coordinate and support design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR), including review of and advisement on materials, tracking action items, and following up on closure.
  • Ensure verification and validation (V&V) activities are defined, documented, and supported with objective evidence.
  • Assure design documentation and configuration control, including revision tracking and proper release of engineering artifacts.
  • Confirm and assure design compliance assessments and identify gaps, risks, or inconsistencies in requirements, verification, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering assurance, project planning, engineering, quality, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to ensure consistent application of design controls.
  • Ensure development of key deliverables including test plans/reports, compliance matrices, technical documentation, and qualification packages.
  • Track and communicate process compliance to standards and support continuous relevance to business needs.
  • Contribute to process improvements, including development of templates, checklists, and standard work.
  • Support internal and external audits (e.g., AS9100) through preparation of documentation and objective evidence.
  • Support and inform senior design assurance group manager.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Working knowledge of engineering principles, design processes, and product development lifecycle.
  • Experience or familiarity with design controls, requirements traceability, verification/validation, and configuration management (AS9100 preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate tasks across multiple stakeholders and manage competing priorities.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including ability to document and present technical information.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional environment.
  • Interest in or demonstrated capability toward project coordination, planning, and execution.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance is required.
