Power BI Developer – Job Description

Overview

A Power BI Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining business intelligence solutions that transform data into actionable insights. This role focuses on creating interactive reports, dashboards, data models, and analytics solutions that support informed decision‐making across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

1. Dashboard & Report Development

• Develop visually compelling and user‐friendly Power BI dashboards, reports, and paginated reports.
• Utilize DAX to create calculated measures, KPIs, and complex data transformations.
• Optimize report performance and ensure positive end‐user experience.

2. Data Modeling & Architecture

• Design efficient and scalable data models following best practices (star schema, normalization).
• Integrate data from various sources (SQL databases, Excel, SharePoint, cloud sources, APIs).
• Clean, transform, and prepare datasets using Power Query (M language).

3. Data Analysis & Insight Generation

• Translate business requirements into analytical solutions.
• Provide detailed insights, trends, and recommendations based on data.
• Perform data validation and ensure accuracy and integrity across all BI deliverables.

4. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

• Work closely with business units, analysts, and leadership to gather requirements.
• Provide technical support, training, and documentation for end‐users.
• Collaborate with IT and data engineering teams on data pipelines and governance.

5. Governance, Security & Best Practices

• Implement and maintain row‐level security (RLS) and other data security practices.
• Manage Power BI Workspaces, deployments, and report access.
• Ensure adherence to corporate standards for BI development and data quality.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Proficiency in Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, Power Query, and DAX.
• Strong understanding of relational databases and SQL.
• Experience with data modeling, ETL processes, and data warehousing concepts.
• Ability to analyze complex datasets and convert them into actionable insights.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to translate business needs into technical solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Azure data tools (Azure SQL, Synapse, Data Factory, Databricks).
• Knowledge of Python or R for advanced analytics (optional).
• Familiarity with DevOps practices for BI deployment pipelines.
• Background in business analysis or a related field.
