The
Senior Cybersecurity Architect provides expert-level security architecture and design support for the unique research and development ecosystem at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This role is responsible for designing the security infrastructure that enables DARPAs high-risk, high-reward programs, advising mission owners on advanced cyber defense capabilities, and ensuring the agencys modernization efforts (including Zero Trust and secure cloud adoption) are built on a resilient and compliant foundation.
Responsibilities - Design shared services and cloud infrastructure environments to achieve high-level security certification equivalents (e.g., FedRAMP HIGH).
- Plan, design, evaluate, and integrate cybersecurity solutions across the enterprise.
- Provide cybersecurity engineering services, including designing IT enterprise systems against existing and emerging cyber threats; developing and upgrading security capabilities of legacy systems.
- Coordinate security-related activities with information security architects, senior agency information security officers, system owners, common security control providers, and information system security officers.
- Facilitate the integration of security and privacy requirements in the Secure System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to address security and privacy considerations in a cost-effective manner.
- Assess architecture and current solution limitations; define and design system specifications, input/output processes, and working parameters for solution compatibility.
- Provide security consulting, architecture, application security services, tools management, and engineering support for systems, emerging IT, and IT security initiatives.
- Ensure IT security is embedded and threaded throughout the IT architecture for all projects.
- Provide security architecture and engineering expertise across agency initiatives to ensure a secure enterprise encompassing internal systems, cloud services, and external/third-party service provider systems.
- Perform research, evaluation, and engineering of security technologies, products, and solutions designed to safeguard, monitor, and assess the security of organizational IT assets.
- Evaluate security products currently in use and those proposed for use, including analysis of individual products, their integration into the overall architecture, interactions with other products, and interfaces with external systems.
- Review, analyze, and comment on project-deliverable documents in support of the Software/System Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and System Engineering Life Cycle (SELC).
- Create, update, revise, and maintain Cyber Security Architecture, Engineering, and Security Tools documentation using industry best practices.
- Provide documentation support, architectural design, security engineering, application security, and cybersecurity tools management.
- Provide expert-level consultation and technical services on all aspects of cybersecurity, specifically continuous monitoring.
- Demonstrate leadership and foster a collaborative team approach; interact effectively with frontline staff and senior management, providing consultation and expert advice on information security-related topics.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree and 12+ years of relevant experience.
- Associate's degree and 14+ years of experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent, 16+ years of experience
- 12+ years of overall experience in cybersecurity, with a proven track record of designing, building, and implementing enterprise security solutions.
- 7+ years of deep technical experience across multiple cybersecurity disciplines (e.g., network security, identity management, vulnerability management, cloud security).
- ISC(2) CISSP certification required.
- Top Secret Clearance with ability to obtain TS/SCI
Preferred Qualifications: - CISSP-ISSAP
- GDSA
- SABSA Chartered Security Architect (SCF/SCM/SCO)
- Additional relevant certifications (e.g., CISM, CEH) are a plus
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Direct, hands-on experience architecting a DoD Security Operations Center (SOC) or supporting CSSP/CPT operations is mandatory.
- Expert knowledge of network security principles, vulnerability scanners, secure configuration (CIS benchmarks), and database/OS security.
- Deep understanding of NIST frameworks (RMF, 800-53), ISO 27001, SOC2, and other compliance standards.
- Ability to translate tactical issues into a strategic perspective and apply critical thinking to solve complex problems.
- Proven ability to assess and weigh security risks in an operational environment.
- Ability to navigate political landscapes and build relationships at all levels.
- Excellent consulting, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with senior management and technical staff.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team, managing shifting priorities effectively.
