Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Area Planning Engineer for a contract position. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in utility distribution or area planning and will be responsible for managing regional planning work independently. This role requires developing cost-effective solutions for electric service, forecasting and planning system improvements, and performing technical studies to ensure the reliability of transmission and substation facilities. The position is based in Savannah, although open to potential travel for candidates located in Atlanta.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop innovative and cost-effective solutions for electric service to new and existing customers, maintaining the reliability of transmission and substation facilities.
- Forecast, plan, and develop transmission and/or substation addition and improvement projects for a 5-year budget period.
- Perform normal and contingency loading studies for substation and sub-transmission lines, including voltage drop, flicker, and transformer capability analyses.
- Proactively build and maintain relationships with associates in Transmission, Distribution, Sales, and other organizations.
- Provide Area Planning services for the Georgia Integrated Transmission System (ITS) Participants.
- Facilitate and execute solution team meetings, both virtually and in-person at field locations, substations, and line rights of way.
- Manage regional planning work independently and conduct site visits as required.
Required Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology is required. An equivalent of 10+ years of significant utility experience may be considered.
Experience: A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in utility distribution or area planning is required. Experience should include roles at an Engineer III to Senior level.
Technical Skills:- Technical knowledge in Distribution Reliability, Distribution Planning, Distribution Engineering, Substation Design, or Protective Equipment Applications.
- Knowledge of Transmission Construction, Transmission Line Design, Substation P&C Field Services, Transmission Maintenance, Transmission Project Management, or System Operations.
- Demonstrated ability to work with internally-developed software.
Preferred Qualifications
- An Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.
- A Professional Engineer's (PE) License is a plus.
- Experience with PSS/E or other System Modeling software.
- Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Access.
