Job Tittle: Substation Physical Designer

Location: Birmingham, Alabama (Onsite)

Role Overview

We are seeking a Substation Physical Designer responsible for developing 2D and 3D design drawings for Transmission and Distribution substations. This role involves supporting design standards and standardization efforts using tools like AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor. The position includes preparing engineering drawings, ordering materials, and coordinating with various stakeholders, with occasional site visits and travel required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and modify substation physical design packages, including foundation, grounding, conduit, switchgear, switch house, bus, and overall substation layouts.
  • Utilize AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and related design tools for creating 2D and 3D drawings.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements.
  • Order stock, non-stock, and fabricated materials for projects.
  • Transmit design packages and coordinate with engineers, vendors, manufacturers, and internal teams.
  • Support construction, field services, project management, and maintenance teams.


Required Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, or an Associate Degree with at least 5 years of related industry experience, or a high school diploma with at least 8 years of significant related industry experience.

Technical Skills: Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A strong understanding of electrical substation equipment.
  • Experience in Transmission and/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company.
  • A good understanding of utility electric grid operations and basic electrical power system theory.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code, National Electric Code, and OSHA safe operating practices.
  • Ability to create electrical Substation Physical drawings from a single line or three-line diagram.
  • Experience creating or manipulating 2D drawings and 3D models for electrical substations.
  • Experience using 3D modeling software such as SDS Inventor, Autodesk Inventor, or Autodesk 3D (P4A).
  • AutoCAD training or experience.
  • Experience with document management and estimating systems.
  • Experience using Primavera (P6) or other progress reporting software.
