Summary

Project Overview

This role will lead and scale an enterprise-wide Data Governance function for a top private energy organization in the U.S. The Data Governance Lead will play a critical role in strengthening how data is managed, trusted, and used across the business. This is a highly visible initiative driven by the organization's continued investment in data, analytics, and AI readiness.
The team is approximately a year and a half into a major data transformation and has identified gaps in data governance, cataloging, and data quality. This role will directly address those gaps by establishing governance standards, enabling business-led data ownership, and ensuring data is accessible, secure, and reliable. The work will have a direct impact on decision-making, regulatory alignment, and enterprise analytics initiatives.
This opportunity is ideal for a senior data governance professional who can balance strategic vision with hands-on execution and who is comfortable influencing both business and technology stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the enterprise Data Governance practice, owning the governance framework and ensuring consistent execution across the organization
  • Drive adoption of data ownership and stewardship models, establishing clear accountability at the data domain level
  • Oversee data cataloging initiatives to improve discoverability, certification, and effective use of data assets and data products
  • Establish and scale Data Quality Management practices, including defining critical data elements, quality rules, monitoring, and issue resolution
  • Partner with Security, Legal, Compliance, and Records Management teams to ensure data protection through classification and retention policies
  • Align governance priorities with business and technology initiatives, including analytics modernization and AI readiness
  • Lead governance forums and working groups to support decision-making, resolve issues, and drive policy adoption
  • Enable a data marketplace approach, ensuring trusted data is accessible to the right users at the right time
  • Develop and deliver data literacy training for Data Owners, Data Stewards, and end users
  • Lead, mentor, and develop data governance team members, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics/Data Science, or a related business discipline
  • Proven experience in data governance, data management, or a related field
  • Hands-on experience with data cataloging and data quality management
  • Strong ability to influence and collaborate across business and technology teams
  • Solid understanding of data governance principles, including policies, cataloging, and data quality frameworks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related technical or business field
  • Certification in data governance, data quality, or data management
  • Experience leading or contributing to an enterprise data governance program
  • Hands-on experience with data catalog tools such as data.world, Collibra, or Atlan
  • Familiarity with Microsoft technologies including Azure, Microsoft Fabric, and Power BI
  • Background in regulated or data-intensive industries such as energy or financial services
  • Experience with data classification, retention, and compliance frameworks

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $90.00/hr.
