Senior Controls Engineer / Power Conversion Specialist


Pay: $85-$97/hr.


Location: Onsite/Hybrid in Hanover, MD


Work Authorization: U.S. Citizenship required

About the Role


Join a cutting-edge engineering team developing advanced motor control and power conversion systems. We are seeking a highly experienced engineer with deep expertise in high-power motor drives, inverters, and control systems to lead complex designs and mentor engineering teams.


This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you will own system-level designs from concept through testing.


Key Responsibilities


  • Lead the design and development of high-power motor controls, drives, and power conversion systems

  • Architect and deliver electrical and control system designs for complex projects

  • Develop and analyze inverters, active front-end rectifiers, and motor drive systems

  • Perform modeling, simulation, testing, and troubleshooting of power electronics

  • Participate in and lead design reviews and technical evaluations

  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and systems engineering teams

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership

  • Drive innovation with a focus on system performance, efficiency, and reliability


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or related field

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in motor controls and power conversion systems

  • Proven expertise in high-power motor drives and control systems

  • Strong experience in power electronics design, testing, and troubleshooting

  • Ability to lead technical efforts and work both independently and collaboratively


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with advanced motor control techniques (three-phase brushless motors, SVPWM, sensorless control)

  • Embedded systems experience (C programming, DSPs, microcontrollers)

  • Knowledge of IGBTs, MOSFETs, SiC devices, and inverter topologies

  • Experience with MATLAB, SPICE, Altium, AutoCAD, or similar tools

  • Strong understanding of control systems, EMI/EMC, and PCB layout

  • Hands-on experience with lab and test equipment (oscilloscopes, power analyzers, etc.)


Nice to Have


  • Experience in marine, underwater, or robotics systems (ROVs/AUVs)

  • Knowledge of high-voltage power systems (up to 3000+ VAC)

  • Experience with oil-immersed electronics or harsh environments

  • Background in motor design and construction
