Meet HII's Newport News Shipbuilding
With more than 25,000 employees - including third-, fourth- and even fifth-generation shipbuilders - HII's Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia. We're the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Our diverse and innovative team of professionals ranges from skilled trades to project managers, engineers and software developers to solution architects, technical subject matter experts, and system users. Anchored in our rich, 135-year history, we collaborate together at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration of the most powerful and survivable naval ships in the world. Want to be part of the team? Apply today! We look forward to meeting you.

The Role

Provides technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

This position will be in the Aircraft Carrier Engineering Propulsion Machinery Department (E64), which leads the US Navy in the design, repair, and modernization of propulsion machinery and piping systems on Aircraft Carriers. Our components and systems literally move these massive aircraft carriers! Our work directly supports the mission readiness of these US Navy assets, which defend our country's freedom and provide humanitarian support around the world. We are second to none in our expertise in overhauling and repairing the carriers' giant turbines, gears, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, propellers, and shafts.

We work hand-in-hand with our Trades and Construction Management personnel to plan and support the mid-life nuclear refueling and complex overhaul as well as other maintenance periods of these ships. Our engineering technicians spend time in the office, at our suppliers across the country, at our in-house manufacturing facilities, and on the ships, whether at our piers, in our dry-docks, at other yards or naval bases around the world, or out to sea. Candidates will be visiting production environments, climbing vertical and inclined ladders, accessing confined spaces, and occasionally traveling. Our department often performs the role of a "technical detective," troubleshooting and determining the cause of problems, and then works to implement corrective and preventive actions. Our engineering technicians perform a liaison function in the field between the design staff and resources in E64 and the mechanics, test engineers, operators, and suppliers.

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

Nice to Have

  • Experience with the design, operation, overhaul, and/or maintenance of large-scale turbine generators, steam turbines, diesel engines, heat exchangers, motor-driven or turbine-driven pumps, piping systems, and/or various valve types, especially those on Navy ships.
  • Strong communication skills, be organized, and have project management skills.
