Senior Business Systems Engineer

About the Organization

Our client is an industry-leading manufacturer of specialty structural steel products. They are seeking a Senior Business Systems Engineer to take ownership of a key technical role-supporting and enhancing an existing in-house MES/manufacturing application while helping design, build, and roll out a brand-new ERP platform.
Position Overview

This is a hands-on, high-impact role combining software development, database architecture, system integration, data migration, and direct partnership with internal business teams across Sales, Accounting, Purchasing, Production, and Quality. You will translate complex operational workflows into practical, scalable software solutions.

The existing manufacturing execution system (MES) governs active work orders, production planning, quality control, and material traceability. The incoming ERP platform will expand organizational capabilities across quoting, customer orders, inventory, purchasing, shipping, invoicing, AR/AP, and core financial/transactional workflows.
Key Responsibilities

• Architect, design, and develop new ERP functionalities while maintaining and optimizing the current MES environment.
• Design robust database schemas, data models, complex queries, views, stored procedures, and optimal database structures.
• Develop secure APIs and custom system integrations to bridge data flow between applications, databases, and shop-floor hardware.
• Manage end-to-end data migration and legacy system functionality cutovers.
• Partner directly with non-technical stakeholders to capture requirements, guide system design, and manage deployment through the full software development lifecycle (SDLC).

Qualifications & Technical Stack

• Core Development: Professional software development experience building business-critical enterprise applications using Python, alongside working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
• Database Expertise: Advanced SQL and relational database design skills (MySQL strongly preferred), including query optimization, performance tuning, and data modeling.
• Integration & Tools: Proficiency with Git, API development, and data exchange frameworks.
• Domain Knowledge: Strong preference for background experience with ERP, MES, inventory control, or order management systems-ideally within a manufacturing or heavy industrial setting (work orders, bills of materials, production planning, or quality control).
• AI-Assisted Engineering: Familiarity leveraging AI coding platforms (e.g., Claude, Codex) as an accelerator while retaining rigorous, independent code validation and testing standards.
• Autonomy & Communication: Proven ability to operate independently, communicate fluidly with executive and operational stakeholders, and act as a senior technical resource. Prior experience acting as a lead or primary developer on internal business systems is a major advantage.
