Software Engineer - Huntsville, AL

Role Overview

Our client is rapidly expanding its engineering team to support multiple new defense-related programs. This role offers the opportunity to work on mission-critical software supporting advanced networking, testing, and integrated defense systems in a highly automated, modern development environment. The ideal candidate is a well-rounded software engineer who can contribute beyond coding-including testing, debugging, documentation, and system support-and thrives in a fast-paced environment with significant ownership and limited oversight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and test software applications and products for air and missile defense systems.
  • Implement high-performance software solutions that meet stringent real-time and reliability requirements.
  • Develop and optimize containerized applications using tools like Docker and Podman for deployment across diverse operational environments.
  • Collaborate with customers, users, and cross-functional team members throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Contribute to Agile development practices, including sprint planning, code reviews, and continuous integration/deployment.
  • Provide ongoing engineering support, troubleshooting, and performance optimization for fielded products.
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts.
Required Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of experience, or a Master's degree with 0+ years of experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.

Experience: 3-7 years of C/C++ or object-oriented software development experience with a proven ability to design, develop, and troubleshoot complex software applications. Must have experience working in a modern development environment, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, version control, and software quality best practices. The ability to work independently in a technical environment with strong problem-solving skills is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with JavaScript, Node.js, React, or full-stack development.
  • Python scripting experience, particularly for test automation and tooling.
  • Background supporting containerized applications and automated deployment environments.
  • Experience developing networked applications or distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with government or defense software programs, particularly with Air and Missile Defense domain knowledge or IBCS.
  • Proficiency with development tools such as Jira, Confluence, and GitLab.
  • Experience with Data Distribution Service (DDS) for distributed systems.
Work Environment

Engineers will support a C-based networking library embedded within customer applications, as well as a network testing platform featuring a C backend and a Node/React frontend. The environment emphasizes automated testing, CI/CD, and containerized deployments.
