About the Role
We are seeking an accomplished Senior Data Engineer / Technical Lead with deep expertise in both Mainframe technologies and AWS cloud services to join our Data Engineering team within the Insurance domain. This role will lead end-to-end solution design, development, modernization, and delivery of data pipelines as we migrate from legacy mainframe systems to a modern data ecosystem on AWS.
The ideal candidate brings a strong blend of technical leadership, hands-on development expertise, and exceptional communication and client management skills to guide complex projects, work with cross-functional teams, and represent the team confidently with business and technical stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Lead design, development, and modernization of data workflows from mainframe source systems into AWS-based data platforms.
Define target-state architecture, integration patterns, and cloud-native best practices.
Provide technical direction and mentorship to development teams across onsite and offshore locations.
Ensure adherence to enterprise architecture standards, data governance, and security guidelines.
Mainframe Development
Analyze, enhance, and develop mainframe components using COBOL, JCL, VSAM, DB2, and related utilities.
Reverse-engineer legacy logic and translate business rules into modern data engineering solutions.
Support lifecycle activities including impact analysis, performance tuning, and production troubleshooting.
AWS Cloud Engineering
Architect and develop scalable data ingestion, transformation, and storage solutions using AWS services such as:
S3, Lambda, Glue, Step Functions, EMR, Redshift, DynamoDB, SNS/SQS, CloudWatch, etc.
Develop ETL/ELT pipelines leveraging AWS-native and open-source frameworks.
Implement CI/CD pipelines using CodePipeline, CodeBuild, GitHub, Bitbucket, or Jenkins.
Stakeholder & Client Management
Engage directly with business users, product owners, and client leadership to gather requirements, clarify objectives, and provide status updates.
Present solutions, roadmaps, and progress updates in a clear, executive-friendly manner.
Serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients, ensuring alignment between technical solutions and business goals.
Project & Delivery Oversight
Plan and track development activities, ensuring timely and high-quality deliverables.
Collaborate with QA, DevOps, Data Architecture, and Project Management teams.
Proactively identify risks, issues, and dependencies, and drive them to resolution.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field.
8 12+ years of hands-on experience in software development and data engineering.
Strong expertise in Mainframe (COBOL, JCL, VSAM, DB2).
Proven hands-on experience with AWS cloud services, including data engineering and serverless patterns.
Solid understanding of data warehousing, ETL/ELT, and data modeling concepts.
Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile methodologies.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including client-facing interactions.
Demonstrated experience leading teams, managing deliverables, and working in complex enterprise environments.
Experience working within the Insurance industry (P\&C, Life, Health) with understanding of policy, claims, billing, or underwriting systems.
