Kentro is seeking an experienced Application Performance Monitoring (APM) Manager to lead enterprise-scale monitoring operations supporting the Veteran's Administration. This leader oversees two core teams - Instrumentation Engineering & Sustainment (IES) and Monitoring Architecture & Standards (MAS) - responsible for delivering full stack performance visibility across ~800 applications, platforms, and associated infrastructure.

The APM Manager ensures the reliability, performance, and end to end health of critical VA applications by driving proactive detection, reducing MTTx (MTTD/MTTA/MTTE), improving telemetry quality, and aligning monitoring workflows to incident and SRE practices. This role requires disciplined operational leadership, engineering acumen, and the ability to mature enterprise observability capabilities within a high tempo environment.

Reporting to the Service Reliability & Operations Manager, this leader plays an essential role in sustaining service health and enabling rapid, data driven response to performance issues affecting VA staff and Veterans nationwide.

Location: This position can be performed remotely within the United States and will support Eastern Time working hours.

Compensation Range: The salary for this position is between $157-167K/annually. Factors affecting pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities

Instrumentation Engineering and Sustainment Leadership:

  • Lead and mentor the IES team responsible for deploying, maintaining, and optimizing monitoring instrumentation across ~800 applications and networked systems.
  • Ensure high-quality telemetry (metrics, logs, traces, events) and end-to-end visibility across application tiers.
  • Improve alert fidelity using smarter thresholds, correlation, anomaly detection, and AIOps capabilities.
  • Oversee intake and triage of ~8,000 monitoring alerts per day, ensuring accurate prioritization and escalation.
  • Continuously refine signal-to-noise ratio through tuning, automation, and root-cause reduction.

Monitoring Architecture and Standards Leadership:

  • Direct the MAS team responsible for monitoring platform operations, observability architecture, standards, and AI-driven analytics.
  • Define and enforce enterprise monitoring best practices, instrumentation patterns, and telemetry governance.
  • Partner with engineering, application owners, and infrastructure teams to ensure consistent, scalable observability.
  • Lead integration of APM capabilities with incident management, dashboards, SLO/SLA reporting, and service health analytics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, electronics engineering, or other engineering or technical discipline.
    • 8 years of experience can be substituted for education.
  • 15+ years in IT operations, service reliability, enterprise monitoring, or incident management, including 5+ years managing operations teams.
  • Experience overseeing service delivery to a federal client.
  • Proven experience leading multi-site IT operations and diverse operational teams.
  • Strong background in ITIL practices, event and incident management, and customer support operations.
  • History of collaboration and flexibility, including innovative solutions to solve challenges facing large, complex enterprises.

  • Exceptional leadership, coaching, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong client relationships and manage escalations effectively.
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring, major incident management
  • Ability to prioritize work and self-direct with minimal input.
  • Strong messaging capabilities to create team cohesion, team-focus and ongoing drive.

  • Willing and able to obtain and maintain Public Trust Clearance
  • Must meet updated ID requirements:
