DescriptionThe team is seeking an experienced COBOL Programmer to support and enhance mission-critical applications for the client. This role requires strong mainframe development expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate closely with both technical staff and end users. The position will eventually assume responsibilities from a retiring subject-matter expert, making reliability, adaptability, and long-term commitment essential.
Key Responsibilities- Develop, maintain, and enhance COBOL applications using CICS, DB II dialect, JCL, and SQL Server.
- Work within the Micro Focus Enterprise environment (currently v7, upgrading to v11) using Visual Studio.
- Collaborate with users and business stakeholders at the client to gather requirements, troubleshoot issues, and support ongoing operations.
- Participate in modernization efforts, including Azure-based integrations and reporting enhancements.
- Support batch and online processing, ensuring system stability and performance.
- Work closely with the current system expert to transition long-term knowledge and responsibilities.
- Follow internal development standards, including GitHub workflows and Fortify scanning (training available).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills:- T-SQL (noted as a major skill gap - strong candidates will stand out). They have a lot of stored procs that were rewritten in T-SQL
- Experience with RESTful APIs
- Exposure to Azure, especially Azure Data Factory
- Familiarity with Power BI for reporting- this is a nice to have but most reports will be written in Power BI moving forward as they modernize.
- GitHub and Fortify
- Interest in modernization and willingness to learn new technologies

- Strong communication skills, especially when working with challenging or non-technical users. Communication skills is a top focus for this role since all of the projects are focused on modernization, being able to communicate clearly with other employees and users to relay technical information, gather insight and more is a key part of this role. Because of all the change there may be some difficult users so being able to work with many types of people and be able to get the information you're needing is important.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.
