Mainframe Developer Job Description
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer with strong expertise in COBOL, DB2, CICS, ISPW, and Agile methodologies. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and deploying high quality mainframe applications. This role requires excellent analytical skills, the ability to work in a collaborative Agile environment, and a strong understanding of end to end mainframe development processes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Application Development & Enhancement
Design, develop, and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, and CICS.
Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
Enhance and modernize existing mainframe systems as needed.
2. Testing & Quality Assurance
Perform unit testing, integration testing, and regression testing for all developed components.
Ensure code quality, performance, and compliance with organizational standards.
Work closely with QA teams to validate functionality and troubleshoot defects.
3. Deployment & Production Support
Manage code migration and deployment using ISPW and other version control tools.
Support production releases, troubleshoot production issues, and provide timely resolutions.
Ensure smooth execution of batch jobs and online transactions.
4. Collaboration & Agile Delivery
Work as part of a cross functional Agile team, participating in daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
Collaborate with Business Analysts, Product Owners, and other developers to deliver high quality features.
Contribute to continuous improvement of Agile processes and development practices.
5. Documentation & Compliance
Create and maintain technical documentation, including design documents, data flow diagrams, and deployment instructions.
Ensure all development activities comply with organizational and industry standards.
Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience in mainframe development.
Strong hands on expertise with:
COBOL
JCL
DB2
CICS
ISPW or equivalent mainframe version control tools.
Solid understanding of Agile development methodologies.
Experience with performance tuning of batch and online applications.
Ability to troubleshoot complex mainframe issues across multiple components.
Preferred Skills
Experience with Rexx, VSAM, or IMS.
Knowledge of DevOps practices for mainframe environments.
Familiarity with modernization tools or migration projects.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Soft Skills
Strong problem solving and analytical thinking.
Ability to work independently and within a team.
