Job Title: Senior ZFS Storage Engineer - Remote / Telecommute

Job Type: Contract

Pay Range: $47.00hr - $52.00hr

Job Overview:

The candidate will be responsible for designing, scaling, and configuring enterprise-grade ZFS storage clusters to support demanding production workloads.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect, deploy, and manage enterprise-grade ZFS storage clusters (OpenZFS / TrueNAS Enterprise / custom FreeBSD/Linux deployments) to support demanding production workloads.
  • Configure, tune, and maintain storage pools (zpools), vdev layouts, datasets, ZIL/SLOG, and L2ARC to optimize for high-IOPS and bandwidth requirements.
  • Monitor storage utilization, growth trends, and lifecycle management to proactively scale compute and capacity ahead of business demand.
  • Conduct deep performance analysis and benchmarking; troubleshoot complex I/O bottlenecks across ZFS, kernel, network, and hardware layers.
  • Implement robust backup, disaster recovery, and data retention strategies using native ZFS replication, snapshot schedules, send/receive pipelines, and scrub routines.
  • Design and maintain multi-controller HA storage configurations and multipath I/O (MPIO) architectures.
  • Demonstrate experience with ZFS pool recovery techniques, repairing degraded arrays, and managing hardware failures without data loss.
  • Utilize expertise in enterprise protocols including NFS, SMB/CIFS, iSCSI, and NVMe-oF.
  • Apply extensive experience with storage server hardware, SAS/SATA/NVMe topologies, HBAs, JBODs, and high-speed networking (10GbE 100GbE, InfiniBand, RDMA).

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise storage engineering and systems administration with core expertise in ZFS.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise with ZFS / OpenZFS in production environments.
  • Expert understanding of ZFS internals (vdev topologies, ARC management, ZIL/SLOG selection, dataset properties, record sizes, compression, deduplication, and snapshot lifecycle).
