Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced State & Local Tax (SALT) – Income and Franchise Tax Senior Associate to provide tax planning, consulting, compliance, and advisory services to multiple clients.
The Senior Associate will collaborate closely with the Income & Franchise Tax team and work with associates and other professionals on a variety of tax matters. This role will have increasing responsibility for client engagements, tax projects, technical research, return review, and engagement management.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage client engagements from planning through completion, including executing and directing tax projects and managing project budgets.
- Supervise, train, and mentor associates and interns on tax projects.
- Participate in engagement reviews and perform in-charge responsibilities as needed.
- Provide a full range of State & Local Tax services, including tax return preparation and review, tax research, technical memorandums, and client correspondence.
- Perform reverse sales tax reviews, audit defense activities, and research sales tax issues.
- Review tax returns prepared by staff and provide recommendations to improve accuracy and identify tax-saving opportunities.
- Conduct multi-disciplinary and multi-state tax reviews involving income, franchise, sales and use, payroll, ad valorem, and other state and local taxes.
- Identify optimal filing options, exemptions, credits, incentives, and corporate structures that may reduce clients' tax burdens.
- Prepare increasingly complex State & Local Income/Franchise Tax returns.
- Apply and demonstrate knowledge of increasingly complex tax concepts.
- Respond to inquiries from the IRS and other federal, state, and local tax authorities.
- Work collaboratively with team members to meet client deadlines and engagement objectives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- 2–6 years of progressive tax compliance and/or tax consulting experience.
- Strong knowledge of State & Local Tax concepts, particularly income and franchise tax.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong teamwork, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines effectively.
- Willingness to travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA, JD, or Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT) preferred.
- Experience with State & Local Income/Franchise Tax.
- Experience with multi-state tax compliance and consulting.
- Experience with tax research, audit defense, and sales/use tax reviews.
- Previous experience supervising or mentoring junior tax professionals is a plus.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have 2–6 years of progressive tax compliance or consulting experience, with a strong foundation in State & Local Tax, income/franchise tax, and multi-state tax matters.
Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical ability, attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple client assignments while working effectively within a team environment.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $101,200 – $129,030 per year. Placement within the range will depend on factors such as job-related knowledge and skills, experience, geographic location, business needs, internal equity, and progression within the role.
Work Environment
This position is based in Los Angeles, CA, with an onsite/hybrid work arrangement requiring three days per week in the office.
