Location: Remote
Industry: Distribution / Supply Chain Automation
Technical Environment : This role blends enterprise software engineering with industrial automation.
This role offers the opportunity to work on greenfield automation tied to a new distribution center launch, with ownership across system design, integration, and go-live-not just post-implementation support. Engineers in this role have a direct voice in how automation is architected, how workflows are optimized, and how technology evolves as the operation scales. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer with deep experience in warehouse automation, material handling systems, and WMS-integrated software to help design, build, and optimize the systems that physically move product through the facility.
What You'll Be Doing

You will:
Design and develop backend services that control and coordinate warehouse automation, including conveyors, scanners, labeling equipment, and routing logic
Build software that reads scan data, applies business rules, and directs cartons to the correct lanes or destinations
Evaluate existing automation workflows and re-engineer processes to improve speed, accuracy, and system reliability
Integrate enterprise WMS platforms (SAP EWM) with automation systems using APIs, messaging, and industrial protocols
Support the buildout and go-live of a new North Carolina distribution center, including testing, commissioning, and stabilization
Troubleshoot automation issues in live environments and perform root-cause analysis across software and physical systems
Partner closely with operations, controls engineers, and IT to align software design with real-world warehouse workflows
Core Development
Go (Golang) - primary backend language
SQL (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL)
Linux & Windows environments
REST APIs, event-driven and message-based systems
Automation & Integration
SAP EWM / WMS integrations (APIs, IDocs, RFCs)
Conveyor systems, scanners, print-and-apply labeling equipment
PLCs and robotics exposure (Allen-Bradley, Siemens preferred)
Industrial / IoT protocols: MQTT, CIP, Modbus (or similar)
DevOps & Infrastructure
CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps)
Docker, Kubernetes
Hybrid cloud + edge computing (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform)
Monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK)
Who This Role Is For:
Have hands-on experience supporting automation in warehouses or manufacturing environments
Understand how software decisions impact physical flow, uptime, and throughput
Are comfortable being on-site during system launches and critical cutovers
Enjoy solving problems where software meets machinery
Required
5+ years backend software development with automation, WMS, or industrial system integration
OR 7+ years backend development with significant automation/PLC/robotics exposure
Experience supporting or leading multi-site rollouts or new facility launches
Willingness to participate in rotating on-call support for mission-critical systems
Preferred
Distribution, manufacturing, life sciences, or high-volume fulfillment environments
SAP EWM-integrated automation projects
