We are hiring a Cyber Security Engineer to support a university system through a flexible, ongoing consulting engagement.
This role is structured as a “bucket of hours” model — the client will allocate hours on an ongoing basis (not a guaranteed 40 hours/week), with consistent weekly work expected and a long-term roadmap of projects (1+ year).
This is ideal for a senior-level engineer or consultant looking for steady part-time work with flexibility.
What This Role Looks Like
Ongoing cybersecurity engineering support across a complex university IT environment
Work will fluctuate week-to-week (estimated 10–30 hours/week, depending on priorities)
Projects and initiatives will be assigned and executed incrementally
Opportunity to expand scope as additional hours are purchased
Key Responsibilities

Secure Systems Architecture & Engineering>
Design and implement secure solutions across endpoints (Mac/Windows), networks, and cloud/on-prem systems
Identify vulnerabilities and lead remediation efforts
Evaluate system architecture for security, scalability, and performance

Security Strategy, Standards & Compliance>
Improve security processes for data protection (storage, transmission, processing)
Align systems with frameworks such as NIST, CIS, PCI-DSS, FTC
Help mature the organization’s overall security posture

Identity & Access Management (IAM)>

Continuous Improvement>
Provide ongoing recommendations on tools, threats, and best practices

Required Qualifications
4+ years of hands-on cybersecurity engineering experience
Strong technical background across:
Endpoint security (Mac & Windows)
Networking and infrastructure security
Cloud and on-prem environments
Experience with security frameworks (NIST, CIS, PCI-DSS, etc.)
Relevant certifications (CISM, GCED, GCCC, or similar)
Strong communication skills and ability to work independently
Preferred Qualifications
6+ years of experience in cybersecurity
Experience in higher education or large enterprise environments
Familiarity with compliance frameworks (SOC2, ISO 27001, HIPAA)
Advanced degree
