Location: Remote (U.S. preferred)
Engagement Type: Contract (Hourly – Flexible Workload)
Duration: Long-term (12+ months, ongoing extensions expected)

Engagement Overview

We are hiring a Cyber Security Engineer to support a university system through a flexible, ongoing consulting engagement.

This role is structured as a “bucket of hours” model — the client will allocate hours on an ongoing basis (not a guaranteed 40 hours/week), with consistent weekly work expected and a long-term roadmap of projects (1+ year).

This is ideal for a senior-level engineer or consultant looking for steady part-time work with flexibility.

What This Role Looks Like

  • Ongoing cybersecurity engineering support across a complex university IT environment

  • Work will fluctuate week-to-week (estimated 10–30 hours/week, depending on priorities)

  • Projects and initiatives will be assigned and executed incrementally

  • Opportunity to expand scope as additional hours are purchased

  • Support incident response efforts and investigations

  • Collaborate with IT leadership and CIO stakeholders on resolution strategies

< data-start="2240" data-end="2283">Identity & Access Management (IAM)
  • Assist with identity governance and access controls across systems

  • Support both user and service account security strategies

< data-start="2418" data-end="2449">Continuous Improvement
  • Provide ongoing recommendations on tools, threats, and best practices

  • Act as a trusted advisor to leadership on cybersecurity initiatives

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of hands-on cybersecurity engineering experience

  • Strong technical background across:

    • Endpoint security (Mac & Windows)

    • Networking and infrastructure security

    • Cloud and on-prem environments

  • Experience with security frameworks (NIST, CIS, PCI-DSS, etc.)

  • Relevant certifications (CISM, GCED, GCCC, or similar)

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in cybersecurity

  • Experience in higher education or large enterprise environments

  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks (SOC2, ISO 27001, HIPAA)

  • Advanced degree

Engagement Details (Important)

  • Flexible hourly engagement (no guaranteed 40 hrs/week)

  • Consistent weekly work expected

  • Long-term engagement (12+ months)

  • Hours will increase/decrease based on project demand

  • Must be comfortable working independently and managing workload

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

  • Long-term, stable consulting engagement

  • Flexible schedule — great for consultants balancing multiple clients

  • High-impact work across an enterprise university system

  • Opportunity to grow scope as the engagement expands
