About the Role

ExecuPOWER is seeking an experienced Senior CAD Technician ' Substation Services to support the design and development of electric utility substation projects. This role is ideal for a highly skilled CAD professional with 7+ years of electrical substation drafting experience who is ready to take on greater technical responsibility, support project execution, and provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced CAD Technicians.

As a Senior CAD Technician, you will work closely with Substation Engineers, Designers, Project Managers, and CAD Technicians to produce accurate, high-quality electrical drawings and engineering deliverables. You will use AutoCAD and/or Bentley MicroStation to develop new drawing packages, modify existing designs, incorporate field information, and prepare as-built documentation.

This is a hands-on technical role with opportunities to contribute to design development, troubleshoot drafting and design issues, support project schedules and budgets, and serve as a technical resource for the CAD team.

What You'll Do

Substation CAD & Drafting
  • Develop and maintain detailed electrical substation drawings using AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, or similar CAD platforms.
  • Prepare new drawing packages, modify existing drawings, and develop accurate as-built documentation.
  • Translate field notes and information into electronic drawing deliverables with guidance from Engineers and Designers.
  • Interpret engineering and design requirements and apply appropriate drafting standards and procedures.
  • Perform limited design-related functions under the direction and supervision of Engineers or Designers.
  • Work with raster drawings and other electronic design documentation as required.
  • Ensure drawings are accurate, complete, organized, and consistent with client and company standards.

Project Support & Delivery
  • Support substation projects from initiation through completion, helping ensure drafting deliverables are completed accurately, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Coordinate with Engineers, Designers, Project Managers, and other CAD Technicians to monitor schedules, priorities, project standards, and special requirements.
  • Prioritize multiple assignments based on project deadlines and deliverable requirements, including IFC, As-Built, Manufacturer Order, TTP, IFR, and Internal Review packages.
  • Perform assigned peer checks and quality reviews.
  • Monitor assigned work and communicate potential schedule, resource, or technical issues to the appropriate project lead.
  • Support other projects and teams when workload allows to maintain productivity and project continuity.

Technical Leadership & Mentorship
  • Provide technical guidance and day-to-day support to less experienced CAD Technicians.
  • Help CAD Technicians understand drafting standards, project requirements, and best practices.
  • Serve as a technical resource for drafting questions and assigned project tasks.
  • Train, coach, and mentor junior team members to improve technical skills, drawing quality, and efficiency.
  • Share knowledge and practical experience across the Substation Services team.

Quality Assurance & Troubleshooting
  • Perform quality reviews and peer checks to identify drafting errors, inconsistencies, and potential design issues.
  • Recognize discrepancies and communicate concerns to Engineers, Designers, and Project Managers for timely resolution.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving drafting and design implementation issues under appropriate engineering guidance.
  • Maintain high standards for drawing accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
  • Ensure deliverables comply with applicable client requirements, industry standards, company procedures, and safety requirements.

Client & Team Collaboration
  • Work collaboratively with Engineers, Designers, Project Managers, and CAD Technicians supporting electric utility substation projects.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for drafting standards and assigned CAD tasks within project teams.
  • Participate in project meetings and technical discussions to communicate progress, priorities, and potential issues.
  • Communicate effectively with remote team members and project stakeholders.
  • Escalate questions, technical concerns, and resource issues to the appropriate lead or supervisor.
  • Build positive working relationships with internal stakeholders and clients.

Standards & Continuous Improvement
  • Stay current with evolving substation drafting standards, CAD technologies, utility requirements, and industry practices.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve CAD workflows, drawing quality, project efficiency, and deliverable consistency.
  • Contribute ideas and practical solutions that improve Substation Services processes.
  • Support the development and implementation of improved drafting standards, procedures, and best practices.

What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Computer-Aided Drafting, CAD, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline; or a high school diploma with drafting coursework and equivalent technical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in electrical substation drafting or closely related utility engineering drafting.
  • Demonstrated experience creating, modifying, reviewing, and maintaining electric substation design drawings.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, or similar CAD software.
  • Experience working with raster drawings and electronic engineering documentation.
  • Strong understanding of drafting standards, techniques, procedures, and quality requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and OneNote.
  • Strong attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to produce accurate technical deliverables.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex assignments and competing priorities while meeting project deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote, cross-functional project environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, support, and collaborate with less experienced CAD Technicians.
  • Professional, team-oriented approach with a history of positive interactions with coworkers, engineers, designers, and clients.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting electric utility substation engineering and design projects.
  • Experience with electrical substation drawing packages, including equipment layouts, wiring diagrams, schematics, grounding, control, or related documentation.
  • Experience with 3D CAD, intelligent CAD, or model-based design software.
  • Knowledge of electrical design principles and substation engineering concepts.
  • Experience interpreting field notes and incorporating field conditions into engineering drawings.
  • Experience performing CAD quality control, peer reviews, and drawing package reviews.
