JOB DESCRIPTION

THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.

ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.

The Sign Fabricator is responsible for in-house technical fabrication of various sign types and the on-site installations of signage across Metro. Skilled in the production, fabrication and installation of vinyl products and other related signage, the incumbent produces signs of various sizes and colors, using a variety of materials and substrates that are in compliance with standards outlined in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrorail System Signage Design Manual.

Principal Job Duties

Creates/Fabricates signage from scratch using approved sign specifications, shop drawings or other descriptions of signs.
Fabricates, repairs, refurbishes and refinishes defective signs following approved layout/design procedures.
Uses various vinyl plotters, large format digital printers, engraving/routing machines and vector-based design software and equipment.
Installs signs throughout the Rail and Bus systems, working from ladders, scaffolding and manlifts.
Operates and uses hand tools, portable power tools and related equipment required for installation tasks.
Measures, marks and scribes dimensions and reference points to layout signs for WMATA RAIL, BUS and support facilities. Verifies dimensions and alignments with measuring instruments and ensures established standards and requirements are met. Designs, lays out and fabricates complex signs and illustrations.
Performs assignments according to requirements and ensures the highest quality and adherence to specifications.
Uses proper forms and completes required documentation and reports regarding the installation, maintenance or modification of signs and directories. Prepares requisitions for parts and materials from supply storerooms and vendors. Ensures that equipment, systems and associated mechanical devices are maintained accordingly to manufacturers requirements and WMATA's standards.
Attends and passes the required safety training classes and continuously learns industry best practices for working safely and efficiently.

Maintains and promotes awareness and accountability with safety policies and procedures while performing job functions. Promotes a positive safety culture and encourages reporting of safety concerns consistent with our Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Knowledge

Knowledge of current industry standards and best practices in industrial sign fabrication/installation
Knowledge of design, layout and fabrication of complex signage
Knowledge of vector-based graphics/rip software
Knowledge of operating vinyl plotters and large format digital printers
Knowledge of ADA signage standards including fabrication and installation specifications

Skills

Skill in operating CNC router, vinyl plotters, large format digital and solvent printers, Gerber design software and equipment as well as other vector design software and sign fabrication equipment
Skilled with Composer/Art Path, Dimension 200 Router Engraver, Sabre 408
Skill in communication and interpersonal interaction engage courteously and effectively with supervisor, co-workers and other internal and external customers

Abilities

Ability to die cut vinyl adhesive material using a plotter
Ability to apply industry best practices in industrial sign fabrication
Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding and other high-rise equipment
Ability to take supervisor's direction and complete assignments in a timely and accurate manner
Ability to identify and apply basic facts and principles of the Authority's operating, maintenance and safety rules, regulations and procedures
Ability to complete written forms, tags, and other documentation describing maintenance work
Ability to enter data into computer records; ability to prepare materials requisitions
Ability to shovel snow and operate snow removal equipment
Ability to work variable shifts, days and nights as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education

High school diploma or possession a general equivalency diploma (GED)

Minimum Experience

A minimum of two (2) years' experience performing satisfactorily the duties of a Sign Fabricator or related field.

Minimum Certification/Licensure

A valid motor vehicle operator's permit
RWP Certification, level 2, within one year of hire and maintained for duration of time in job
