Position SummaryThe Manager of Item Management and Data Governance is a strategic, people-first leader responsible for building, developing, and inspiring a team that supports how the business creates, maintains, and uses product data. This role partners closely with merchandising, inventory, supply chain, and supplier teams to ensure item data enables efficient operations, strong vendor collaboration, and informed business decisions.
This leader will guide the evolution of item management practices and foundational data governance activities, balancing structure with practicality as the team continues to mature. Success in this role is driven by strong leadership, business partnership, and influence - ensuring data is understood, trusted, and used effectively across the enterprise.
The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and change leader who can translate business needs into clear priorities for the team, coach others through ambiguity, and build momentum toward consistent, scalable data practices.
Primary ResponsibilitiesPeople Leadership & Team Development- Lead, develop, and coach a team of analysts and data stewards; build a high-performing and collaborative culture.
- Set clear goals, expectations, and development plans for team members.
- Foster an environment of accountability, continuous learning, and operational excellence.
- Guide team prioritization, workload balancing, and emerging governance activities.
- Support talent development, hiring decisions, onboarding, and career progression within the team.
Strategic Leadership, Communication & Change Management- Act as a trusted partner to merchandising, inventory, supply chain, digital, finance, store operations, and supplier-facing teams.
- Translate business needs into clear item management and data stewardship priorities.
- Lead change by promoting consistent data practices that support operational efficiency and supplier experience
- Develop clear communication, training, and reporting that drive understanding and adoption across the organization.
- Prepare executive-ready updates and recommendations tied to business outcomes and operational impact.
Item Management & Data Quality Oversight- Oversee item setup and maintenance processes to ensure accuracy, completeness, and usability of product data.
- Guide the team in resolving data quality issues, conducting root-cause analysis, and driving long-term corrective action.
- Lead programs focused on legacy data remediation, data lifecycle management, and golden record creation.
- Identify gaps and inefficiencies in onboarding and maintenance workflows; design solutions to enhance scalability and automation.
- Champion initiatives that reduce manual effort, improve cycle time, and enhance supplier digital experiences.
Cross-Functional Partnership & Influence- Serve as the primary liaison between item management, merchandising, supply chain, digital, finance, store operations, and vendor partners.
- Influence leaders across business and technology teams to drive governance maturity and accountability.
- Communicate data related issues in clear, practical business terms.
- Build enterprise alignment for data quality initiatives, prioritization, and process optimization.
Governance Strategy & Risk Management- Help establish foundational governance practices, including roles, responsibilities, and basic standards as the team matures.
- Establish and enforce governance standards for item attributes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
- Monitor data quality through KPIs, dashboards, audits, and remediation processes for both legacy and active items.
- Evaluate new tools, capabilities, and best practices that enhance data governance maturity.
Required Qualifications- 5+ years of experience in product data management, item setup, or related retail operations.
- At least 2+ years of experience leading teams or managing people (formal or informal leadership accepted).
- Experience with MDM/PIM platforms (e.g., STIBO) and workflow-driven processes.
- Demonstrated ability to lead through influence, drive organizational change, and collaborate across functions.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in fast-paced, evolving environments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills using tools such as Excel and visualization platforms (e.g. Tableau).
Preferred Qualifications- Experience utilizing technical tools, such as: Tableau, SQL

- Creative, out-of-the-box thinker who is intellectually curious with a demonstrated interest in learning
- Communicate effectively and succinctly, both verbally and in writing via Microsoft PowerPoint
EducationBachelor's degree in Business, Merchandising, Supply Chain, Data Management, or a related field; or equivalent experience.

Pay RangeThe typical pay range for this role is:
$66,330.00 - $145,860.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
