Role Description The lab specialist

  • Handles reagent/analyzer contracts, reference lab agreements, blood bank, POCT, specimen collection.
  • Highly specialized — this is NOT a general clinical supply chain role.

  • Evaluate analyzer platform consolidation across 6 CHSLI hospitals
  • Review reference laboratory contracts (send-out testing, esoteric testing, genetics)
  • Assess blood bank utilization, product wastage, and crossmatch ratios
  • Conduct POCT program reviews for consolidation and vendor standardization
  • Work with Lab Directors, Pathologists, Medical Directors, and Technical Supervisors

  • 3+ years managing lab supply contracts (reagent/analyzer, reference lab, or blood bank)

  • Familiar with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission as they relate to supply decisions
  • Can speak the language of pathologists and lab directors

Job Description:

  • Distinguish between laboratory and general clinical supply chain processes and implement best practices tailored to lab-specific needs.
  • Apply the reagent–analyzer interdependency model to optimize purchasing and inventory management for laboratory testing platforms.
  • Negotiate, manage, and maintain laboratory-specific contracts, including those for reagents, analyzers, reference labs, and service agreements.
  • Manage high-risk supply categories such as Point-of-Care Testing (POCT), ensuring risk mitigation and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor and incorporate guidance from regulatory bodies (e.g., FDA, CAP, CLIA, CMS) into laboratory procurement and contract decisions.
  • Identify and leverage opportunities for renegotiation in reagent and analyzer contracts to achieve cost savings and operational efficiency.
  • Analyze and assess opportunities for analyzer platform consolidation across multiple hospitals or sites to drive standardization and savings.
  • Track and report on key metrics related to blood bank utilization, waste, and inventory levels to support optimal resource allocation.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Lab Directors and Pathologists to align supply chain strategies with clinical goals and operational needs.
  • Oversee and address challenges in reference laboratory contract management, including test menu alignment, turnaround times, and pricing.
  • Evaluate and manage conversion opportunities from one analyzer platform to another, ensuring minimal disruption and optimal value.
  • Lead and support POCT consolidation initiatives, proactively addressing common failure points and implementing corrective strategies.
  • Develop and implement cost control measures for molecular, genomics, and esoteric testing while maintaining clinical quality.
  • Balance clinician autonomy with supply chain standardization by engaging stakeholders and facilitating evidence-based decision-making.
  • Demonstrate advanced supply chain acumen by integrating clinical, technical, and financial expertise in lab supply management, setting the senior lab supply chain manager role apart from traditional supply chain roles.
