Overview

We’re seeking a hands-on Data Governance Lead to define and implement an enterprise-wide data governance framework. This individual will play a dual role — both strategist and executor — responsible for establishing governance policies, implementing Microsoft Purview, and partnering with Finance and IT to operationalize governance across a modern data mesh environment.

This is a player/coach role ideal for someone who enjoys both building strategy and doing the work. The role offers the opportunity to help design the foundation of an evolving data governance function, with a long-term path to a full-time leadership position.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the implementation of Microsoft Purview as the organization’s core data governance platform (Microsoft Fabric experience is a plus, but can be taught).
• Partner with Finance, IT, and business data stewards to define data ownership, standards, and policies.
• Establish and document foundational governance frameworks — policies, processes, and role definitions.
• Collaborate across data domains (Finance, HR, Operations, etc.) within a hub-and-spoke governance model.
• Support early Master Data Management (MDM) discussions and help mature related processes.
• Act as the bridge between business and technical teams to ensure alignment with the organization’s data mesh strategy.
• Define and track KPIs to measure governance impact on data quality, accessibility, and compliance.
• Serve as a visible leader onsite (2–3 days per week), actively engaging with cross-functional stakeholders.

Ideal Background

• Proven experience implementing or scaling data governance programs (experience with Microsoft Purview strongly preferred).
• Knowledge of data mesh, data fabric, or modern analytics architectures.
• Strong communication and facilitation skills with the ability to influence across teams.
• Comfortable being a team of one initially — proactive, hands-on, and adaptable.
• Experience in data stewardship, metadata management, and policy creation.
• Familiarity with MDM and enterprise BI environments.
