Job Description

Position Summary

As a Senior Structural Engineering Professional, you will be an integral member of the design team, responsible for performing a significant portion of structural analysis and design for projects. You will work closely with the Structural Lead, Structural Engineers, Structural Designers, and other disciplines to develop design concepts, complete structural analysis and design, and ensure structural requirements are accurately communicated through design documents and models.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in structural engineering principles, knowledge of multiple subject areas, and experience with U.S. building codes, including seismic provisions. You should understand how structural design integrates with and impacts other disciplines while developing an understanding of business trends, industry issues, and challenges.

This position may require you to serve as a Lead Structural Engineer for medium-sized projects or as a Sub Lead for larger projects. Opportunities for career growth will depend on your motivation, capabilities, and attitude.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis in Structural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer License (PE/PEng).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in structural engineering.
  • Proficiency with U.S. building codes, including IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, and AISC.
  • Proficiency with structural engineering analysis software, Navisworks, and Bluebeam.
  • Proficiency in designing and analyzing traditional steel and concrete structures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering or a Master's degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Structural Engineer License (SE).
  • Experience in semiconductor industrial or general industrial facilities.
  • Experience leading medium-sized teams.

Working Conditions and Requirements

  • Candidates must reside in the Southwest region: Arizona (AZ), California (CA), Colorado (CO), Hawaii (HI), New Mexico (NM), Nevada (NV), or Utah (UT).
  • Candidates residing within 50 miles of the Phoenix office will be required to report to the office two days per week. Otherwise, the position will be remote.
  • Employees must provide internet service at home as required to effectively meet project performance requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

Structural Engineering Analysis and Design

  • Independently perform all conventional aspects of structural engineering analysis and design with little or no supervision.
  • Plan and conduct work requiring independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment and problem-solving skills, seeking guidance or confirmation when questions arise.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of lateral analysis and design principles, including wind and seismic analysis, and apply the required provisions of applicable building codes.
  • Design and analyze traditional steel and concrete structures.
  • Work collaboratively with designers to communicate structural requirements through design documents and models.

Quality Control and Technical Review

  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail and quality control.
  • Check your own work and consult peers and senior engineers for guidance when needed.
  • Perform calculation checking and review of other engineers' work.
  • Ensure structural engineering deliverables meet project quality requirements.

Project and Scope Management

  • Take responsibility for managing workload, meeting commitments, and maintaining ownership of assigned work.
  • Take complete ownership of the assigned portion of the structural scope, ensuring schedule, budget, and quality requirements are met.
  • Take initiative to clarify tasks with ill-defined conditions of satisfaction to meet project and client needs.
  • Clearly define assigned scope and forecast the level of effort required for completion.
  • Identify scope changes and escalate them to the Structural Lead or Project Manager.
  • Recognize when assistance is needed and proactively seek guidance from peers and senior engineers.
  • Complete work in a timely, accurate, and cost-effective manner while maintaining strong attention to detail.

Leadership and Professional Development

  • Serve as a Lead Structural Engineer on medium-sized projects or as a Sub Lead on larger projects, as required.
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to designers, drafters, and less experienced engineers.
  • Collaborate effectively with Structural Leads, Structural Engineers, Structural Designers, and other disciplines.
  • Proactively advance workflows, systems, and tools within the structural discipline.
  • Embrace emerging technologies and contribute to continuous improvement within structural engineering practices.
