Industry: Engineering & Construction
Workplace Type: On-site (Omaha, NE preferred; Lenexa, KS acceptable)
Contract Length: 6 months (strong potential for full-time conversion)
Job DescriptionThis role supports a large-scale engineering and construction organization that is modernizing how technical and engineering documents are reviewed and audited. The project focuses on advancing a production-grade, Azure-based AI document auditing platform designed to dramatically increase the volume and quality of engineering work reviews through intelligent automation.
This is not a greenfield initiative. The platform is already live in production and requires a senior-level engineer who has successfully shipped and supported Microsoft Azure systems in real-world environments. The engineer will work hands-on across backend services, AI workflow reliability, orchestration, and operational hardening while partnering closely with a lead engineer.
The system leverages a fully Microsoft-native stack, including Azure Functions, Durable Functions, Azure AI Foundry (Microsoft Agent Framework), Azure OpenAI, Azure Document Intelligence, SharePoint, Microsoft Graph, Service Bus, Blob Storage, and SQL Server. The goal is to build a scalable, reliable agent-based AI system that removes manual bottlenecks and enables consistent quality control at enterprise scale.
Project Initiatives & Impact- Expanding AI-driven document review capabilities to address a major operational bottleneck where only a small percentage of engineering documents can currently be reviewed
- Improving reliability and observability of AI agent workflows operating in a live production environment
- Hardening event-driven Azure architectures to support higher throughput, better error handling, and long-term scalability
- Enabling engineering teams to focus on higher-value work by automating quality checks and compliance reviews
- Contributing directly to systems that support large, complex infrastructure and construction projects across North America
Key Responsibilities- Extend and maintain event-driven Azure Functions and Durable Functions supporting document ingestion and AI processing workflows
- Improve AI agent orchestration, lifecycle management, evaluation quality, and system reliability
- Work with SharePoint and Microsoft Graph integrations for document ingestion and downstream processing
- Build and support queue-based processing, APIs, and reporting/export workflows
- Add and maintain automated tests, structured logging, error handling, and operational documentation
- Collaborate closely with the lead engineer on architecture and implementation decisions
- Participate in stakeholder check-ins and communicate technical progress clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
Required Skills & Experience- Senior-level Python backend development experience
- Strong hands-on experience with Azure Functions and Durable Functions
- Production experience with Azure Document Intelligence or Content Understanding
- Experience using Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft Agent Framework, and/or Azure OpenAI in live systems
- Solid engineering practices around testing, typing, logging, CI/CD, and observability
- Experience building and supporting systems in a production Azure environment
Ideal Candidate Profile- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Recent, hands-on delivery experience within the Microsoft Azure ecosystem
- Comfortable working in an established production system with minimal hand-holding
- Strong collaborator who can partner closely with a lead engineer
- Able to communicate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders
- Availability to overlap with U.S. working hours
- Interested in long-term conversion to full-time employment
