Position Description:
Client: Fairfax County
Location: Hybrid (Fairfax, VA - 2 days onsite)
Employment Type: Long-term contract
Job Summary:
· The Fairfax County Department of Information technology (DIT) is seeking an Enterprise Architect under any of the labor categories: Cloud Engineer, Cloud Architect, Business Intelligence Architect/Developer, or Systems Engineer.
· We’re looking for an Enterprise Architect to support our Chief Architect while he leads the County through large-scale infrastructure transitions and cloud modernization. In this role, you’ll be the connective tissue between DIT, agencies, and technical teams, spending a lot of time listening, facilitating workshops, and turning complex needs into clear technical architecture and delivery plans.
Key Responsibilities
Scope and Deliverables Include:
· Serve as the primary architectural liaison for major technology initiatives and assessments underway.
· Serve as a Technical discovery & systems architect responsible for mapping, documenting, and baselining current-state enterprise IT architecture across on-premises data centers and hybrid-cloud environments.
Position 1
· Lead key disaster recovery and business continuity efforts, including architecture for critical facilities such as 911 and backup sites.
· Assess the current state (RTO/RPO, DR plans, risks) and define the target state with clear, actionable DR architectures.
· Shape secure remote access and perimeter defense patterns with security and network teams—focusing on principles and capabilities, not just products.
· Partner with domain admins to improve Active Directory and identity architecture, and help define roles and responsibilities (RACI) for core services.
· Guide network segmentation and the retirement of legacy network overlays to improve security and resilience.
· Work with application, database, and infrastructure teams to improve observability—so issues are detected early and recovery is faster.
· Translate technical risks and options into clear language for the CIO, senior leadership, and agency stakeholders, enabling informed decisions.
Position 2
· Serve as the primary architectural liaison for major facility move‑outs and large‑scale workload shifts, planning how to address capacity gaps and move enterprise platforms to scalable cloud infrastructure.
· Work with infrastructure and database teams to:
1. Evaluate storage capability gaps.
2. Oversee hardware and software lifecycle strategies.
3. Run archive and retention proof‑of‑concepts (POCs) to reduce cost and risk.
· Partner with desktop engineering to define:
1. Modern endpoint management capabilities.
2. Security baselines for devices and workspaces.
3. Strategies for “modern workplace” provisioning (on‑prem, hybrid, and cloud).
· Align cross‑functional requirements for critical communication systems, including:
1. Messaging platform upgrades.
2. Contact center capabilities.
3. Unified paging and alerting architectures.
· Establish and evolve cloud governance models, including:
1. Landing zone and account/subscription structures.
2. Infrastructure‑as‑Code (IaC) standards and patterns.
3. Preparation of materials and options for Architecture Review Board (ARB) discussions.
· Facilitate workshops with agencies and technical teams to surface requirements, constraints, and opportunities, and translate them into practical roadmaps.
