Position Overview

Texas Health and Human Services Commission is seeking an experienced Database Administrator 2 to support database administration, data warehousing, database performance, data modeling, ETL, reporting, security, recovery, and application database environments.

The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining and optimizing enterprise database environments, supporting data warehouse initiatives, ensuring data integrity, assisting with database security and disaster recovery, and working effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, maintain, and support production databases and database management systems.
  • Monitor database performance, memory utilization, record distribution, and overall system efficiency.
  • Perform database performance tuning and recommend optimization strategies.
  • Assist with database planning, development, maintenance, and monitoring of integrated database systems.
  • Evaluate requests for new data elements and incorporate them into shared data environments.
  • Ensure data integrity, control redundancy, and manage database loading and reorganization.
  • Perform logical and physical data modeling and develop relational database models.
  • Support data warehouse population, modeling, and implementation.
  • Develop and maintain data dictionaries and establish consistent data definitions and standards.
  • Implement database search strategies, storage requirements, backup, recovery, and security procedures.
  • Create and maintain test database environments for application teams.
  • Support database recovery procedures for hardware and software failures.
  • Assist with database security standards, disaster recovery procedures, benchmarking, and threshold testing.
  • Assist with database software installation, analysis, design, and implementation.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to users regarding database and data-related issues.
  • Ensure database administration and data input/output interfaces comply with applicable accessibility standards.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should have 5+ years of experience with:

  • Database management systems, data warehouse management, and decision-support tools.
  • Development, implementation, and maintenance of data warehouses and data marts.
  • Business Objects and data dictionary development.
  • Database access tools for application delivery.
  • Analysis, planning, and management reporting.
  • Data warehouse population and data modeling techniques, including:
    • Star Schemas
    • Snowflake Schemas
    • Highly normalized data models
  • GUI-based ETL tools such as Informatica, IBM WebSphere DataStage, or similar technologies.
  • Enterprise databases such as Teradata, Oracle, SQL Server, or similar technologies.
  • Analytical/reporting platforms such as Business Objects, Cognos, Hyperion, MicroStrategy, or similar tools.
  • End-to-end data warehouse implementation, including business requirements, logical modeling, physical database design, data sourcing, transformation, data loading, SQL, and end-user tools.
  • Benchmarking processes and techniques.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical teams while managing multiple responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of Oracle Database experience.
  • 5+ years of Power BI report development experience.

  • 2 Days Remote
  • Schedule is subject to change based on the hiring team's requirements.
  • Candidates must already reside in Texas and be local to the Austin area within a 50-mile radius.
  • Candidates currently residing outside Texas and planning to relocate will not be considered.
  • Standard business hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.
  • Occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays may be required.
