Job Description:

Apex Systems is looking to hire an ONSITE Metallurgical Engineer (Failure Analysis & Materials Testing) for our client based out of Hagerstown, MD.

This assignment is anticipated to be a 6-month contract with strong potential for extension; however, Apex Systems cannot guarantee the length of this assignment.

This will also have a first-shift Monday-Friday schedule.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform metallurgical evaluations to validate heat treatment processes, including analysis of hardness, case depth, and microstructure.
  • Conduct failure analysis investigations using advanced techniques such as microscopy, material characterization, and mechanical testing.
  • Analyze metallurgical data to identify root causes of material failures, defects, or contamination-related issues.
  • Support process improvement efforts by identifying trends and recommending corrective actions for material or process deviations.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to resolve material-related issues and improve product reliability.
  • Perform cleanliness and contamination analysis, including particle identification and classification.
  • Assist with development and standardization of laboratory procedures, test methods, and documentation practices.
  • Support internal and external audits related to material compliance and quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of testing, analysis, and inspection results in accordance with quality requirements.
  • Mentor and support technicians on sample preparation, testing techniques, and best practices.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts within the laboratory and manufacturing environment.

Experience:
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related field (Master's preferred).
  • Experience in metallurgical testing, failure analysis, or materials engineering within a manufacturing or laboratory environment.
  • Strong knowledge of heat treatment processes, including hardening and carburizing (or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with analytical tools such as microscopy, SEM/EDS, hardness testing, and material characterization methods.
  • Understanding of fracture mechanics, material behavior, and metallurgical principles.
  • Experience conducting root-cause analysis and supporting corrective action activities.
  • Familiarity with quality and testing standards (ISO, ASTM, or similar frameworks).
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to clearly document and communicate technical findings.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams within a production or R&D environment.

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with cleanliness or contamination analysis in manufacturing environments.
  • Exposure to nondestructive testing (NDT) methods.
  • Experience supporting laboratory process improvements or standardization initiatives.
  • Familiarity with data visualization or reporting tools for tracking trends and performance.
