Position Overview

Power Your Future with Qualus in our Substation Protection & Control department as a Lead Engineering Technician. Lead Engineering Technicians support engineering teams in the development and production of electrical design packages, technical drawings, engineering documentation, and project deliverables for utility and industrial projects. In addition, they provide technical leadership, coordinate technician activities, and serve as a resource for complex design and documentation efforts.

This role requires the ability to interpret engineering concepts, apply established design standards, and prepare accurate technical documentation using engineering software and drafting tools. The ideal candidate combines strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, leadership skills, and a practical understanding of electrical systems to support the successful execution of engineering projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support engineers in the preparation and development of electrical design packages and engineering deliverables.
  • Prepare, revise, and maintain technical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and related engineering documentation.
  • Interpret engineering sketches, markups, specifications, and design criteria to produce accurate project documents.
  • Develop single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, sections, details, and related project documentation.
  • Follow company, client, and industry drafting and design standards.
  • Perform and coordinate quality reviews of drawings and design documentation prior to issuance.
  • Prepare construction, demolition, and as-built drawing packages as required.
  • Organize and maintain project files, drawing archives, and engineering records.
  • Support document control activities, including client transmittals and project closeout requirements.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, operations personnel, vendors, and clients to support project execution.
  • Verify dimensions, equipment information, and technical data for inclusion in project documentation.
  • Assist with material takeoffs, equipment lists, and other engineering support functions.
  • Support field data collection, site walkdowns, and redline incorporation as required.
  • Lead project coordination and drawing updates throughout project execution.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior engineering technicians and drafting personnel.
  • Support workload planning, task prioritization, and coordination of technician resources across projects.
  • Continuously develop technical knowledge of electrical systems, utility infrastructure, and engineering processes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Electrical Technology, Industrial Technology, Drafting Technology, or a related technical discipline; or equivalent technical training, military experience, trade experience, or relevant work experience.
  • Proficiency using a Windows-based computer environment, including file management, Microsoft Office applications, and common business software.
  • 8+ years of experience supporting engineering, technical, electrical, industrial, utility, maintenance, manufacturing, construction, or related operations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical documents, drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to engineering software, client requirements, and company standards.
  • Ability to apply basic algebra, geometry, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical work, coordinate project deliverables, and mentor junior personnel.
