Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Java Developer with deep expertise in AWS Well-Architected Framework (WAF) reviews, cloud reliability engineering, and observability. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong Java development skills combined with the ability to assess enterprise applications, define cloud architecture improvements, and implement highly available, resilient AWS solutions.

The ideal candidate is a technical leader who can analyze complex application architectures, perform Well-Architected Reviews, improve operational excellence, and implement observability solutions while remaining actively involved in software development and cloud engineering.


Key Responsibilities

Application Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise applications using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Participate in architecture, design, and code reviews.
  • Analyze large enterprise codebases and recommend architectural improvements.
  • Develop reusable application components and shared frameworks.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues across distributed systems.

AWS Well-Architected Reviews

  • Conduct AWS Well-Architected Framework (WAF) Reviews across enterprise applications.
  • Evaluate workloads against the AWS Well-Architected pillars:
    • Operational Excellence
    • Security
    • Reliability
    • Performance Efficiency
    • Cost Optimization
    • Sustainability
  • Identify architectural gaps and define remediation plans.
  • Implement recommended improvements within the enterprise AWS environment.

Observability Engineering

Serve as the technical lead for observability by designing and implementing enterprise monitoring solutions.

Required expertise includes:

  • Amazon CloudWatch
  • Dynatrace
  • Splunk
  • Grafana

Responsibilities include:

  • Capturing application and infrastructure metrics.
  • Building operational dashboards.
  • Log aggregation and analysis.
  • Metrics collection and reporting.
  • Alerting strategy and implementation.
  • Distributed tracing.
  • Performance monitoring.
  • Capacity monitoring.
  • Operational reporting.
  • Automation of monitoring and operational workflows.

The successful candidate will be expected to design, build, and deploy observability solutions into the JPMC AWS environment.

Reliability Engineering

Act as the subject matter expert for application reliability and resiliency.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design highly available AWS architectures.
  • Implement multi-Availability Zone (Multi-AZ) deployments.
  • Design multi-region disaster recovery solutions.
  • Eliminate single points of failure.
  • Define failover and recovery strategies.
  • Improve application resiliency and fault tolerance.
  • Validate architectures against business continuity and disaster recovery requirements.
  • Design solutions that satisfy application non-functional requirements (NFRs), including:
    • Availability
    • Reliability
    • Scalability
    • Performance
    • Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
    • Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

The successful candidate will be expected to design, implement, and deploy reliability improvements into the JPMC AWS environment.

  • Mentor engineers on cloud best practices, observability, and reliability engineering.
  • Remain hands-on by contributing code, troubleshooting production issues, and implementing cloud solutions.
  • Take ownership of complex technical challenges from design through deployment.

Required Experience

  • 15+ years of enterprise Java development.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Spring Boot.
  • Experience conducting AWS Well-Architected Reviews.
  • Extensive experience implementing observability solutions using CloudWatch, Dynatrace, Splunk, and Grafana.
  • Demonstrated expertise designing highly available, resilient AWS architectures.
  • Experience deploying cloud solutions into large-scale enterprise environments, preferably within financial services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional.
  • AWS Certified Developer Associate.
  • Experience working within regulated enterprise environments (e.g., financial services).
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and container platforms.
  • Knowledge of event-driven architectures and Apache Kafka.

Success in This Role

Within the first six months, you will:

  • Complete AWS Well-Architected Reviews for critical enterprise applications.
  • Design and implement observability solutions with actionable dashboards and alerting.
  • Improve workload resiliency through Multi-AZ and Multi-Region architectures.
  • Deliver cloud solutions that meet or exceed application non-functional requirements (NFRs).
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership while contributing directly to development, troubleshooting, and deployment activities.
