Summary

Overview

D435 Main Propulsion Machinery is in search of a COLUMBIA (CLB) class Propulsor Engineer I/II. As integral members of the Navy Propulsor Team, Engineers in this group are dedicated to providing high quality engineering, design, and manufacturing and construction support services to the Navy and to the shipyards. The group leads the integration of ship systems that interface with the CLB GFE propulsor, and provides oversight and coordination of component vendor activities. Engineers in the group work closely with Mechanical Design to create, review, and issue design disclosures supporting the propulsor program.

The group also supports concept design development and engineering studies for propulsor-specific programs sponsored by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division. The group frequently works with other members of the Navy Propulsor Team including Electric Boat's shock, hydrodynamics, shafting and bearing engineering, and ship signatures departments, Pennsylvania State University Applied Research Laboratory, and Navy laboratories.

Duties include creating and checking engineering calculations, evaluation and adjudication of vendor manufacturing and installation issues, preparation of written engineering procedures in support of shipyard installation efforts, and design of GFE and shipyard lifting, handling and transportation hardware. .

Qualifications

Required
  • BS in Mechanical, Structural, Marine or Aerospace Engineering
  • 0-4 years of post-graduate engineering experience

Preferred
  • Strong proficiency and experience with mechanical engineering principles including fastener design, structural strength evaluations, analytical and numerical analysis methods and rotating machinery is desired.
  • Background or experience in finite element analysis methods is desired, but not required.
  • Experience with Electric Boat NX/Teamcenter and the CLB change management processes is a plus.
  • Experience developing analysis methods and mentoring/knowledge transfer is also desirable

Skills

This position requires strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Engineers must work well with all levels of engineering, trades, trade management, and the Navy Propulsor Team. Candidate must be a detail oriented and highly motivated team player. Occasional travel to Washington DC or vendor sites may be required. The individual should have the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and procedures.
