Summary

Overview

Responsible for leading and developing a team of engineers responsible for the Enterprise Developer Experience and Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) platform. Provides technical leadership, strategic direction, execution oversight, and people management for engineering services that enable software development across the enterprise. Accountable for the reliability, security, scalability, adoption, and continuous improvement of developer platforms including source code management, CI/CD, software quality, software supply chain security, AI-assisted development capabilities, artifact management, and related engineering tooling.

Partners with Architecture, Cybersecurity, Infrastructure, Cloud Engineering, and Application Development teams to deliver a modern, secure, and efficient software delivery ecosystem that improves developer productivity and engineering effectiveness.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead, coach, develop, and manage a team of Lead Engineers, Senior Engineers, Engineers, and contract resources responsible for Enterprise Developer Experience and SDLC platform services.

Establish team priorities, objectives, performance expectations, career development plans, staffing strategies, and succession planning activities.

Provide technical direction and oversight for enterprise developer platforms including:
  • GitLab SCM
  • GitLab CI/CD
  • GitLab Duo and AI-assisted development capabilities
  • GitLab governance and platform administration
  • SonarQube
  • JFrog Artifactory
  • Mend
  • IDE ecosystems and integrations
  • Developer portals and self-service platforms
  • DevSecOps and software supply chain security tooling
  • Engineering productivity and developer experience solutions

Develop and execute the strategic roadmap for Enterprise Developer Experience capabilities aligned with organizational technology objectives.

Drive adoption of enterprise standards, patterns, and best practices for source control, code review, CI/CD, testing automation, software quality, software supply chain security, and release management.

Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance for platform designs, integrations, upgrades, migrations, and modernization initiatives.

Oversee platform engineering activities that improve developer productivity, reduce delivery friction, standardize engineering practices, and accelerate software delivery outcomes.

Partner with enterprise architecture and engineering teams to define long-term platform strategies and technology investment priorities.

Ensure platform resiliency, scalability, availability, observability, supportability, and operational excellence through effective engineering and operational practices.

Establish and monitor service-level objectives, operational metrics, platform health indicators, and developer experience measurements.

Drive platform governance, risk management, compliance, audit readiness, and security remediation activities in partnership with Cybersecurity and Risk functions.

Manage vendor relationships, product roadmaps, licensing, renewals, support agreements, and technology evaluations.

Review and approve major platform changes, implementation plans, enhancement requests, operational procedures, and technology recommendations.

Lead incident response, problem management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement efforts related to developer platform services.

Provide executive and senior leadership updates regarding platform performance, engineering productivity metrics, strategic initiatives, investment opportunities, risks, and delivery progress.

Promote a culture of engineering excellence, continuous learning, innovation, collaboration, and accountability.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives spanning organizational boundaries where technology, process, or platform opportunities are identified.

Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to senior management.

Promote an environment that supports a culture of belonging and reflects the Company's values.

Maintain internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit findings, regulatory requirements, and risk remediation activities.

Complete other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities

Directly manages a team of Lead Engineers, Senior Engineers, Engineers, and contract resources.

Responsible for:

  • Provides technical leadership and strategic direction across multiple developer platform domains supporting enterprise-wide software engineering organizations.

Education and Experience Required

A combined minimum of 9 years' higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 4 years' engineering and/or architecture experience and 3 years leadership experience

Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams responsible for enterprise platforms, DevOps, platform engineering, developer experience, or software development tooling.

Experience managing complex technology initiatives and cross-functional engineering programs.

Experience providing technical leadership for large-scale developer platforms and software delivery ecosystems.

Education and Experience Preferred

Experience leading Enterprise Developer Experience, DevOps, Platform Engineering, Internal Developer Platform (IDP), or SDLC tooling organizations.

Strong knowledge of GitLab SCM, GitLab CI/CD, GitLab Duo, SonarQube, JFrog Artifactory, Mend, and related enterprise engineering platforms.

Experience supporting large-scale software development organizations and enterprise engineering transformations.

Knowledge of platform engineering, DevSecOps, cloud engineering, software supply chain security, and AI-assisted software development practices.

Experience establishing engineering productivity metrics, DORA metrics, service-level objectives, and developer experience measurements.

Strong organizational, leadership, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills.

Experience presenting strategy, roadmaps, delivery updates, and investment recommendations to senior technology leadership.

Proven ability to build and retain high-performing engineering teams while driving cultural and technical transformation.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $116,400.00 - $194,000.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate's particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
