Job DetailsMy client is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineering Department Manager to lead their Heavy Industry division. This role can be based in Hammond, IN; St. Louis, MO; or Detroit, MI and follows a hybrid work model.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee all mechanical engineering activities, ensuring projects are executed on schedule, within scope, and in alignment with quality standards.
- Plan, organize, and manage departmental resources, workflows, and technical deliverables.
- Support business development efforts by contributing technical insight, expanding existing client relationships, and identifying new opportunities.
- Serve as a senior technical liaison for clients and internal stakeholders.
- Hire, mentor, and develop engineering staff; establish performance expectations and conduct evaluations.
- Define and execute departmental operational plans, including staffing strategies, tools, and technical development initiatives.
- Develop, implement, and maintain engineering policies, standards, and procedures.
- Act as Project Manager and/or Senior Engineer on select projects as needed.
- Prepare and oversee engineering proposals, including scopes of work, schedules, and cost estimates.
- Review, approve, and certify engineering calculations, designs, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Develop and maintain technical standards, specifications, and design bases for mechanical engineering disciplines.
- Collaborate with leaders across offices to support recruiting, training, and knowledge sharing.
- Ensure compliance with Quality Management System across all departmental and project activities.
- Lead projects with varying timelines, balancing long-term planning with fast-paced execution.
- Perform occasional field work and travel to support project execution and business development.
Minimum Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Minimum 10 years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in heavy industrial environments such as steel, manufacturing, petrochemical, chemical, mining, materials processing, or power generation
- Broad mechanical engineering expertise, including piping design, pipe stress analysis, rotating equipment, pressure vessels, hydraulic analysis, and drawing standards
- Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams or departments, ideally within a consulting environment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage clients and technical teams effectively
- Proficiency with modern engineering, project management, and business software tools
