Neos is seeking a Sr. Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD)/VDI Engineer for a contract role for our client.

Neos is seeking an experienced Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) / VDI Engineer to design, deploy, manage, and support a secure and high-performing virtual desktop environment on the Microsoft Azure platform. The successful candidate will serve as a subject matter expert in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) architecture, bringing hands-on expertise with Azure services, virtualization technologies, endpoint management, automation, networking, and security.

This role requires close collaboration with infrastructure, security, application, and project teams to ensure compliance with organizational standards while continuously improving the virtual desktop experience.

Key Responsibilities

Azure & VDI Infrastructure

  • Design, deploy, configure, and manage Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments, including:
    • Host Pools
    • Session Hosts
    • Application Groups
    • Workspace configurations
  • Administer and optimize Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments for availability, performance, and scalability.
  • Evaluate and implement Azure services supporting VDI, including:
    • Azure Active Directory
    • Azure Monitor
    • Azure Storage
    • Azure Networking

Networking & Security

  • Apply networking expertise including:
    • DNS
    • VPN
    • ExpressRoute
    • Network Security Groups (NSGs)
  • Configure and document firewall ports and application traffic flows.
  • Implement and maintain security best practices including:
    • Access controls
    • Data encryption
    • Endpoint hardening
    • Compliance standards
  • Monitor security threats and vulnerabilities and coordinate remediation efforts.

Endpoint & Systems Management

  • Manage Windows Server operating systems supporting VDI workloads.
  • Utilize:
    • SCCM / OSD
    • Microsoft Intune
    • Windows Autopilot
  • Develop and maintain golden images and standard operating environment (SOE) templates.

Scripting, Automation & Troubleshooting

  • Develop automation using:
    • PowerShell
    • Python
    • Equivalent scripting languages
  • Troubleshoot:
    • Performance issues
    • Connectivity issues
    • Application delivery issues
  • Monitor environment health and implement performance improvements.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborate with infrastructure, security, applications, and project teams.
  • Document architecture, procedures, and operational runbooks.
  • Stay current with Azure services, AVD technologies, and industry best practices.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, change management, and project planning.


Required Skills & Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Equivalent experience may be considered.

Experience

  • 3-6 years hands-on experience in IT infrastructure, systems engineering, or cloud engineering.
  • Hands-on experience deploying, configuring, and supporting Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) in production or government environments.

Technical Skills

  • Azure services supporting Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.
  • Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD).
  • Hyper-V and/or VMware virtualization.
  • Networking:
    • DNS
    • TCP/IP
    • VPN
    • NSGs
    • Firewalls
  • Windows Server administration.
  • SCCM / OSD.
  • Microsoft Intune / Autopilot.
  • Identity and Access Management (IAM).
  • Endpoint security and hardening.
  • PowerShell (preferred), Python, or Bash scripting.
  • Performance tuning and troubleshooting within cloud and VDI environments.

Soft Skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microsoft Certified Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104).
  • Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty certification.
  • Experience in government, public sector, or regulated environments.
  • Experience with:
    • Azure Monitor
    • Log Analytics
  • Azure Site Recovery.
  • Backup and disaster recovery planning.
  • Zero Trust security architecture.
  • Multi-service provider environments.
  • Project management experience (PMP or equivalent).
