This person should be comfortable balancing strategic leadership responsibilities with technical execution, performance management, disaster recovery planning, and customer-facing program support.

Position Overview

Peraton is seeking an experienced z/OS Systems Lead to support a long-term contract with the State of Alabama. This is a leadership role that combines hands-on mainframe systems programming with technical team management and data center operations oversight.

The selected candidate will lead a team of system programmers and engineers while providing technical expertise across z/OS environments, network infrastructure, disaster recovery planning, capacity management, and overall data center operations.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

• Lead and manage a team of systems programmers and network engineers.
• Assign work, manage schedules, oversee day-to-day operations, and conduct performance management activities.
• Develop technical roadmaps and provide strategic direction for systems and network environments.
• Coordinate technical initiatives with customers, internal teams, and corporate stakeholders.

Mainframe Systems Programming

• Perform hands-on z/OS systems programming activities.
• Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and upgrade z/OS environments.
• Support DB2 and related third-party software upgrades and maintenance.
• Ensure systems remain at supported release levels.

Data Center Operations

• Oversee system and network architecture for complex enterprise environments.
• Manage software, network products, and infrastructure performance.
• Support hosting, infrastructure services, and systems programming functions.
• Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and technical standards.

Disaster Recovery & Compliance

• Lead disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution efforts.
• Participate in annual disaster recovery exercises.
• Ensure compliance with contractual requirements and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
• Support customer, federal, IRS, corporate audits, and regulatory reviews.

Program & Technical Management

• Conduct system-wide capacity planning and performance analysis.
• Manage software, network, and disaster recovery budgets.
• Evaluate and mitigate technical and operational risks.
• Produce customer reports covering:
• SLA performance
• System performance
• Network performance
• Disaster recovery testing/results
• Future technology recommendations

Required Qualifications

✅ High School Diploma and 10+ years of relevant experience

✅ 5+ years of hands-on z/OS Systems Programming experience

✅ Experience installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting z/OS mainframe environments

✅ 5+ years in a technical lead, project lead, or management role

✅ Strong experience diagnosing and resolving complex system software and/or network issues

Preferred Qualifications

• Data center operations and infrastructure support experience
• Managed services or outsourced data center environment experience
• Strong enterprise mainframe background
• Experience installing, maintaining, and configuring z/OS software and subsystems
• Experience in 24x7x365 production environments
• Disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution experience
• Firm Fixed Price (FFP) contract experience
