Senior Backend Engineer

Irving,TX

6+ months Contract role

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable backend systems using Java-based microservices. You will own end-to-end feature delivery in a production-grade environment, focusing on performance, reliability, security, and observability.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and implement high-quality Java/Spring Boot microservices and RESTful APIs, ensuring scalability, thread-safety, and maintainability
Build and optimize features using event-driven architectures with Kafka for real-time data processing and Avro for schema evolution
Manage caching strategies with Redis to improve performance and reduce latency in high-traffic services
Integrate and configure API gateways using Apigee for secure, governed API exposure and traffic management
Deploy and operate containerized applications with Docker and ECS on AWS, including infrastructure-as-code with Terraform
Work with PostgreSQL databases for reliable data persistence, schema design, and query optimization
Implement monitoring, alerting, and observability using Datadog, Prometheus, and Grafana to ensure system health and quick incident resolution
Handle authentication and authorization flows (including Okta integration) and secure communication protocols (TCP, REST, etc.)
Manage object storage with S3 and ensure proper data handling, backups, and disaster recovery practices
Participate in production support rotations, including on-call duties, root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, and rapid incident response
Collaborate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, contribute to CI/CD pipelines, and support DevOps practices (bash scripting, automation)
Mentor junior engineers during onboarding and feature implementation, review code, and promote best practices
Diagnose and resolve complex issues across the software lifecycle, from development through production deployments

Required Qualifications (Must-Haves)

5 7 years of professional experience as a Backend / Software Engineer, with strong focus on Java development
Proven expertise in Spring Boot and building production-grade microservices architectures
Hands-on experience with:

API Gateway (Apigee)
Caching (Redis)
Message streaming (Kafka)
Containerization & orchestration (Docker, ECS)
Databases (PostgreSQL)
Cloud platform (AWS EC2, S3, etc.)
Monitoring & observability (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana)
Schema formats (Avro)
Authentication & security (Okta, TCP/REST security)
Infrastructure tools (Terraform, bash scripting)
Version control & collaboration (GitHub)

Solid understanding of RESTful services, DevOps principles, and production software lifecycle (including deployments, monitoring, disaster recovery, and troubleshooting)
Experience supporting live production environments, including customer/marketing-impacting features and quick issue resolution
Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and software engineering best practices

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications

5 8 years of overall Software Engineering experience
Additional languages/tools: Python, Perl, Shell Scripting
Advanced CI/CD and automation experience
Knowledge of threading/thread-safe design, continuous integration/delivery pipelines
Exposure to Splunk, Amazon Web Services advanced services, SOAP/B2B integrations, PCI compliance standards
Experience with firewall configurations, microservice drivers, payment card industry (PCI) requirements
Previous work in marketing-related features or high-scale B2B systems
