Overview

DecisionPoint seeks a Senior Disaster Recovery Engineer to design, implement, and maintain enterprise Disaster Recovery (DR) architectures in support of a large federal and DoD-aligned IT program. This role ensures resilience, recoverability, and operational continuity across cloud-hosted environments, applications, networks, and mission-critical databases.

The Senior Disaster Recovery Engineer is responsible for DR strategy execution, DR site readiness, failover modeling, runbook development, and coordination with engineering, cloud, cybersecurity, and database teams. This position plays a key role in achieving mission continuity and ensuring alignment with federal and DoD DR requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Senior Disaster Recovery Engineer will:

  • Design, architect, and maintain Disaster Recovery solutions for cloud, application, network, and database environments.
  • Lead DR readiness activities, including validation of secondary sites, replication models, and failover configurations.
  • Develop and maintain detailed DR runbooks, procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate DR failover planning, including tabletop exercises, simulation testing, and execution of failback strategies.
  • Support Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) validation across all systems.
  • Work closely with cloud engineering teams to design resilient architectures leveraging cloud-native DR capabilities.
  • Coordinate with database administrators to ensure backup integrity, replication accuracy, and HA/DR compliance.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to ensure DR approaches align with RMF controls and IL5 security requirements.
  • Perform DR risk assessments, identify gaps, and recommend mitigation plans.
  • Provide DR status reporting, readiness summaries, and executive briefings.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts for DR architectures, tools, and testing strategies.
Qualifications

Clearance Requirement

Must hold an active Top Secret clearance, supported by a Tier 5 background investigation.

Education (Required)

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cloud Engineering, or a related field.

Experience (Required)

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in disaster recovery engineering, systems engineering, cloud infrastructure, or enterprise IT operations.
  • Experience designing DR architectures for cloud, application, networking, and database systems.
  • Experience coordinating failover/failback procedures and DR testing activities.
  • Experience collaborating with engineering, security, and database teams on DR readiness.
  • Experience supporting DR efforts in federal or DoD environments preferred.


Technical Knowledge (Required)

  • Strong knowledge of DR frameworks, HA/DR design patterns, and system resiliency strategies.
  • Experience with cloud-native DR tools, replication, snapshots, backups, and multi-region architecture.
  • Understanding of IL5 security requirements, RMF controls, and DoD continuity expectations.
  • Proficiency with system monitoring, logging, and performance analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of network dependencies, load balancing, and failover routing.

Technical Knowledge (Preferred)

  • Experience with automation, scripting, or orchestration tools to support DR workflows.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and DevSecOps environments.
  • Experience supporting DR environments using AWS, Azure, or hybrid cloud.


Certifications

Required:

  • CompTIA Security+
  • ITIL v4 Foundation

Preferred:

  • AWS, Azure, or cloud architecture certifications
  • Disaster recovery or business continuity certifications


Skills

  • Strong problem solving and analytical abilities for complex DR scenarios.
  • Excellent communication skills for cross-team coordination and executive reporting.
  • Strong documentation skills for creating detailed runbooks and DR procedures.
  • Ability to lead DR testing activities and manage technical readiness efforts.
