Role Overview The Systems Technology Group within Roche Sequencing Solutions is seeking a
Senior Mechanical Engineer to design and develop advanced sequencing systems.
This is a hands-on, multidisciplinary role focused on solving complex mechanical challenges involving electro-mechanical, pneumatic, thermal, and fluidic systems.
Core Responsibilities - Design and develop mechanical sub-systems including electro-mechanical, pneumatic, fluidic, and thermal components
- Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, materials, and consumables teams
- Develop mechanisms for automated reagent and flow cell handling
- Design and implement thermal control systems
- Lead subsystem integration, verification, and troubleshooting
- Drive design reviews and resolve technical trade-offs
- Manage timelines and technical deliverables
- Create and maintain CAD models, drawings, and specifications
- Contribute to system architecture and technical strategy
- Present technical updates and engineering decisions to stakeholders
Required Qualifications - PhD + 1 year, OR Master's + 2 years, OR Bachelor's + 4 years of relevant experience
- Strong expertise in mechanical and electro-mechanical system design
- Experience with thermal management and precision temperature control
- Hands-on experience with fluidics systems (pumps, valves, sensors, tubing)
- Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks)
- Experience with manufacturing processes (machining, injection molding, 3D printing)
- Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, and chemistry interfaces
- Hands-on experience with machine shop tools and prototyping technologies
- Familiarity with Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools
Preferred Qualifications - Experience with simulation tools (CFD, FEA)
- Background in NGS or genomics instrumentation
- Experience in regulated product development environments
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
Additional Information - This is a fully on-site role in Santa Clara, CA
- No relocation assistance is provided
- No requirement for fluidics/microfluidics specialization, but life sciences instrumentation experience is preferred
