Position Overview
System One is seeking a highly motivated Senior Fuel Handling System Design Engineer to support advanced nuclear reactor projects for a leading clean energy client. This role will focus on the design of mechanical fuel handling and process systems, supporting plant system development from requirements definition through final design.
The successful candidate will act as a mechanical system design engineer, integrating and coordinating with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver robust, safety-focused fuel handling solutions in a regulated nuclear environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design nuclear fuel handling systems and sub-systems from requirements development through final design.
Coordinate review of supporting analyses (thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, heat transfer, etc.) and integrate results into plant design deliverables.
Create Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to support conceptual and detailed system designs.
Provide design direction related to thermal and fluid system requirements.
Identify and apply appropriate design codes and standards (ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, etc.).
Provide technical direction and guidance to engineers on applicable nuclear and non-nuclear design standards.
Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria and standards to complex mechanical and process system designs.
Support planning efforts and maintain schedule adherence for system design activities.
Develop and manage drawing packages, including P&IDs, 3D models, and system interface drawings.
Interface with mechanical, I&C, civil, and nuclear disciplines to define system design and performance criteria.
Provide technical oversight of supplier projects and support technical review of supplier deliverables.
Establish and maintain system requirements and engineering specification documents.
Propose and support system qualification testing programs, including test execution, evaluation, and reporting.
Generate complete design packages including calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications.
Develop and review technical documents such as System Design Descriptions, Interface Control Documents, and Engineering Design Specifications.
Support licensing activities, including Safety Analysis Reports.
Participate in and support system and subsystem design reviews.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university.
Five (5) or more years of direct experience in mechanical system design.
Demonstrated experience designing complex mechanical systems, structures, or equipment.
Previous experience with nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel handling process systems, or similar high-performance system or equipment design is required.
Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence.
Ability to lead and coordinate engineering efforts with minimal direction.
Ability to manage projects with competing objectives and complex design constraints.
Ability to work on multiple simultaneous tasks requiring a multi-disciplinary approach.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in high temperature and multi-discipline integration highly desired.
Experience with thermal, fluid, and mechanical system integration.
Strong understanding of nuclear design codes and regulatory requirements.
Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.
The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly, display respect, and demonstrate a desire to foster teamwork.
Actual position starting level and title will be determined based on assessment of qualifications.
Physical & Work Requirements
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
Fine motor skills (grasping, gripping, keyboard use).
Occasional bending, stooping, and lifting (up to 25 pounds).
Prolonged repetitive work.
Visual and audio-focused tasks.
Standard office and engineering work environments (>8 hours/day).
Travel requirement: 0-5%.
