Internship Overview

The Duke Energy Local IT Support Internship Program is designed for currently enrolled community college students looking to gain hands-on experience supporting technology operations in a critical energy environment. As a member of the Local IT Support team at McGuire Nuclear Station, interns will work alongside experienced technology professionals providing deskside and field support services to station employees.

Interns will assist with laptop, desktop, monitor, and iPad deployments; computer imaging and configuration; hardware installations; user troubleshooting; and technology support requests across the site. Students will also have the opportunity to contribute to special projects, including workstation refresh initiatives and large-scale desktop replacement programs.

This internship provides valuable real-world experience supporting enterprise technology systems while developing technical, problem-solving, customer service, and professional skills. Throughout the summer, interns will gain exposure to Duke Energy's technology organization, nuclear generation operations, and broader business functions through networking opportunities, site experiences, and professional development events.

Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a 2-year degree program in Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration, Computer Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Networking, or a related technical field
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Must not graduate prior to August 2027
  • Ability to work onsite at McGuire Nuclear Station throughout the internship
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.

Desired Qualifications
  • Previous customer service, technical support, or internship experience
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Familiarity with Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office applications
  • Understanding of computer hardware components, peripherals, and mobile devices
  • Experience troubleshooting basic hardware, software, or connectivity issues
  • Knowledge of desktop imaging, software installation, and device configuration processes
  • Familiarity with Active Directory, Microsoft Intune, or endpoint management tools
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals and common IT support concepts
  • Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Exhibits a willingness to learn and a growth mindset

Working Conditions
  • Onsite - Work will be performed primarily at McGuire Nuclear Station. Reliable transportation is required to ensure timely arrival at the facility.
  • Housing stipend available when applicable
  • Many of our opportunities require a 40-hour work week
  • Internship summer session length is 10-12 weeks
  • May require walking between facilities and supporting users in various work locations across the station site
  • Compliance with all site access, security, and safety requirements is required
