Responsibilities

Structures Engineering and Airworthiness

  • Provide engineering expertise in aircraft structures design and integration, manufacturing, quality and industrial engineering, airworthiness, and configuration and data management.
  • Support Interface Control Documents, open-system architecture, hardware, and software as they relate to aircraft structures.
  • Provide technical expertise concerning aircraft structural integrity and airworthiness.
  • Evaluate system suitability for installation, functionality, reliability, and manufacturing readiness.
  • Support the development, procurement, sustainment, and modification of aircraft structural systems, subsystems, components, and equipment.
  • Translate production and operational requirements into design, fabrication, and testing objectives.

Standards and Compliance

  • Apply AFPD 62-6, related Air Force Instructions, and Airworthiness Bulletins.
  • Apply MIL-HDBK-516C Airworthiness Certification Criteria to aircraft systems and subsystems.
  • Apply MIL-STD-1530, JSSG-2006, MIL-STD-1568, and MIL-HDBK-516 requirements.
  • Assess compliance in areas including:
    • Aircraft loads
    • Durability and damage tolerance
    • Material processes and standards
    • Corrosion protection
    • Structural dynamics
  • Provide safety expertise involving MIL-STD-882, FAA safety requirements, and risk packages.

System Integrity and Safety

  • Support Operational Safety, Suitability, and Effectiveness requirements throughout the system life cycle.
  • Help establish, implement, and maintain Life Cycle Systems Engineering and OSS&E processes.
  • Review and update OSS&E baseline documentation.
  • Identify OSS&E elements, track metrics, and coordinate with other organizations to maintain compliance.
  • Support System Integrity Programs, including the Mechanical Systems Integrity Program.
  • Maintain and update the Critical Safety Item list.
  • Monitor airworthiness certification for mission-partner aircraft.
  • Conduct or support mishap-risk assessments, contractor-safety evaluations, safety analyses, and resolution of high-priority safety issues.

Requirements and Technical Evaluation

  • Translate user requirements into weapon-system requirements for design, development, fabrication, testing, evaluation, fielding, and deployment.
  • Translate requirements into prime-contractor engineering documents and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including specifications, System Requirements Documents, and Systems Engineering Plans.
  • Evaluate technical documents for compliance with specifications and airworthiness requirements.
  • Summarize findings, recommend changes, and communicate results to the program office.
  • Perform technical and mission analyses of existing and future operational requirements.
  • Develop system concepts and conduct technology and trade-off assessments of proposed designs and modifications.
  • Conduct material-solution analyses leading to design reviews.

Sustainment and Problem Resolution

  • Apply DoD, Air Force, and general engineering principles to improve the performance and sustainability of current and future weapon systems.
  • Provide rapid-response engineering support for critical supportability problems.
  • Conduct problem identification, impact assessments, and corrective-action development.
  • Analyze equipment and software deficiencies.
  • Recommend, develop, integrate, and test deficiency corrections.
  • Evaluate prime-contractor and subcontractor recommendations involving operational and support issues.

Program and Acquisition Support

  • Prepare or review technical evaluations, engineering studies, reports, analyses, acquisition plans, and acquisition strategies.
  • Develop technical information for staff-summary packages, executive briefings, and milestone approvals.
  • Support engineering cost estimates for the Integrated Master Plan, Integrated Master Schedule, and Systems Engineering Detail Schedule.
  • Provide engineering guidance during contractor source selections when required.
  • Support implementation of the Systems Engineering Plan and identify gaps requiring corrective action.
  • Participate in value-stream mapping and Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in an ABET-accredited engineering discipline
  • At least 15 years of relevant technical or professional experience
  • At least five years of DoD experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in aircraft structures design and integration, manufacturing, quality or industrial engineering, airworthiness, and configuration or data management
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • Proficiency with:
