Tooling Design Engineer 2

Location: El Segundo, California (Onsite)

Role Overview

This role involves designing industrial tools, dies, gauges, drill and assembly jigs, fixtures, and machine attachments for assembly, composite production, or experimental use. The position requires working in a fast-paced environment and collaborating with manufacturing, operations, vendors, and cross-functional engineering teams to ensure tooling meets quality, cost, schedule, and safety requirements. The candidate will work autonomously and within a team, adapting to processes while providing input for process or design innovation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop tooling concepts and support equipment for new and existing programs.
  • Design tooling and equipment, including engineering drawings, inspection requirements, and verification plans.
  • Review designs for manufacturability, fit, form, and function.
  • Identify and mitigate safety risks in accordance with company and government standards.
  • Create layouts of complex assemblies and detailed parts of structures.
  • Develop basic data and make preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes to present design proposals.
  • Interface with internal customers and design review teams to ensure requirements are met.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, operations, and process engineering to support program objectives.
  • Manage tooling projects, including cost, schedule, procurement, and fabrication.
  • Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, and conformity to standards.
  • Identify design errors and recommend revisions or improvements.
  • Support vendors during fabrication and inspect fabricated tooling for drawing compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and proactive problem-solving.
  • Support investigations related to root cause analysis, non-conformances, and process failures.
Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years of relevant engineering experience. Experience with drawing release criteria for completeness, clarity, dimensional accuracy, correctness of materials and processes, and conformity to standards.

Technical Skills: Experience with industry-standard design tools including NX CAD and CATIA. Knowledge of manufacturing, fabrication processes, and machine shop practices. Knowledge and application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018) and drawing weld symbols. Proficiency in 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) and drafting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in engineering, design, and fabrication of special tooling and support equipment.
  • Experience in the design, fabrication, and implementation of tooling for composite parts.
  • Ability to evaluate vendor capabilities for tooling and aerospace part production.
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
  • Experience with stress analysis via hand calculations and FEMAP/NASTRAN.
  • Professional Engineering License.
